|
|
Hey folks,
Thought I would pass along this project: http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=2613, even if I have no involvement with it. Actually I don't even have an eeePC right now... though, I must say, I am intrigued by the littler bugger. Nonetheless, some folks apparently have a working install on some models out there. All the more reason to pick one up IMO.
So anyone here on gentoo forums have any experience with this? Comments or impressions appreciated! _________________ ...and it should be known by now |

We want to buy one for my mother-in-law so I don't see me getting my fingers on it and she'd probably be better off with the Xandros install.. I'm really curious about that thing though. |

Maybe we could make a stage4 / binary overlay for it.
No need to compile stuff.
But it would be handy to have gentoo and gentoo tools on the go with that water proof keybord.
I bet you could get the size of the base system down. _________________ Donate to Gentoo |

OK, I want to install Gentoo on the eeePC, but how am I supposed to start up?
The 2007.0 install cd is too old, it doesn't even recognize the SSD drive. Or am I doing something wrong here? _________________ The Creature from Jekyll Island. |

I used a distro called Pentoo off of a USB stick to load Gentoo onto mine. Do note however that this doesn't get you any networking (as far as I remember) - I used a USB HDD with a copy of portage, the stage3 tarball and distfiles for a few packages (kernel sources, dhcp client, etc). You could also put the atl2 ethernet ebuild and distfiles on there. |

I plan to try the Knoppix installation way. But I will not use Knoppix but the eeexubuntu Live CD. This way I have working wifi and lan during the install. I hope it works this way but as far as I understand is the ability to chroot the only thing necessary to install using this method? |

I have installed gentoo on eeepc using guide from gentoo-wiki and then eee-sources. But sound do not work at all. I get "audio open error: Function not implemented".
I've tried kernel alsa, 23-25 kernels and alsa-drivers 14-16 with no success.
I do not see any complains about completely not working sound. Look like other people do not have same problems.
May be i'm doing something terribly wrong... |

I used 2007 cd, knoppix, eeexubuntu all worked flawless with usb cd-rom. You can also use netboot with eee-sources kernel. |

I am looking to upgrade a 2G eee surf. I am looking for something small.
I noticed eeebuntu does not even fit on the drive.
Is anyone making Gentoo stage 4's for the eee pc that they would share?
Thanks _________________ Donate to Gentoo |

Just set up gentoo on your netbook according to the gentoo handbook _________________ "Dear Enemy: may the Lord hate you and all your kind, may you be turned orange in hue, and may your head fall off at an awkward moment."

It is a 2G eeepc right now I am running puppy Linux on it that takes up less than 500MB.
I am interested in making a very bare bones Gentoo Linux that is smaller than puppy with packages I like.
Plus SSD drives are not very Gentoo friendly.
/proc/cpuinfo shows it is in Intel Celeron 800Mhz clocked down to 571Mhz
I am already using Code: |
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CFLAGS="-march=pentium4 -mtune=pentium4 -pipe -O2" |
on my Toshiba laptop and updates take a long time.
What are the best CFLAGS for the eee? Would the ones from my laptop work? _________________ Donate to Gentoo |

Thanks for that link I had forgotten about that this is actually a older eeepc pre atom.

So I think the flags I am using on my laptop will work for all the eee's.
That would make it easy for me to build them.
I am not sure where to start.
I have been reading this
on how to make a custom systemrescuecd it seems to be based on gentoo.
I have also been checking into the funtoo project's software metro and
http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/releng/catalyst/
I guess I set my criteria as being the light weight simple app's and a minimal kernel.
Then figure out the most minimal USE flags. I dont not plan on building stuff on the eee. So no need for gcc and all that. _________________ Donate to Gentoo |

Just a word of warning about staying with Xandros: When I tried to use Xandros on my (formerly 4GB) eeePC 900A, first thing I did was to upgrade it... and brick it during the upgrade (ran out of disk space)...
Restored from the DVD. Upgraded again. Bricked again. Wiped disk and installed eeebuntu. Now using eeebuntu with the upgraded 32G disk.
Now Ive tried to install Gentoo on my eee to have all my machines on the same flavor of Linux (despite having different architectures...). I've installed to a temporary physical HDD, and will "stage4" it to the 4G disk initially, and depend on external storage for portage and temp space...
However I've run into several issues so far... I guess this may now end up in the hardware section so making a new post there... |

Hmm
What are you using for a kernel? (version and .config?)
What are you using in /etc/make.conf?
USE flags etc.
Are you using baselayout 1 or 2?

Hardware: eeePC 900A with 1GB RAM, targeting 4GB SDD for size, though will be installing to my 32G SSD
Currently using: 2.6.31-gentoo-r6
USE="dhcpcd networkmanager laptop acpi alsa jpeg gtk opengl dbus X consolekit sse ogg vorbis dvd dvdread gnome mbox -maildir nptl nptlonly -qt4 bluetooth obex -arts"
I am actually building on the eee, not cross compiling; but using distcc when possible.
I don't have a typical install yet - installing to an external mechanical USB HDD initially, then eventually transferring to SSD. Still using baselayout1.
Current issues:
Suspend-to-RAM/Resume is unverified. Might work reliably to sdd, but the USB HDD doesn't always work.
gnome can't seem to detect when the system is idle???!?!
Using too much hard drive space for similar configuration as eeebuntu 3 NBR, already discounting extra kernel and portage tree. Target is 2.5GB with everything... Current is 11.4G - 5.2G (portage+distfiles) - 0.7G (Kernel buiild tree) = 5.5G. Ubuntu fit into my 4G SDD with 256M swap and 0.75G to spare.
Need to get eeetray or eeecontrol
Unverified: need to get eee keys working
Backlight does not turn off in idle timeout
Past issues:
NetworkManager not working (reinstall/restart dbus seems to alleviate issue)
ath5k driver broken (can't turn radio on after turning it off) (install PCIEHP into the kernel seems to make it work, with force hotplug options on command line).
hostname changes with networkmanager/dhcpcd causing X to fail - fixed by configuring a hostname
Wish list for eeebuntu 3 : wish it was Gentoo so I could use the same install tree as all my other machines (i.e., everything works in eeebuntu, except upgrades I have to pull from a different repository) _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD
