Portage broke down after crash

Hello,

I was emerging portage and at the end when it was regenerating ld.so.cache or something similar the computer froze. Upon reboot I couldn't run emerge anymore. It gives this error:

bash: /usr/bin/emerge: cannot execute binary file

I searched the forum and found this thread describing the same error:

But I'm reluctant to install portage from a older stage tarball. Wont that mess things up?

read /usr/portage/sys-apps/portage/files/README.RESCUE and try if that solves your problem.
