I did an "emerge -u world" recently and after rebooting, I got a kernel panic:
Code:

VFS: Cannot open root device "sda6XXXXX

With a lot of junk characters after the partition (sda6). Downgrading from grub-0.97-r5 to grub-0.97-r4 fixed the problem. I also re-ran grub-install.

Any idea why it happened? Is there a problem with -r5?

Code:
emerge --sync
emerge sys-boot/grub

Moved from Kernel & Hardware to Duplicate Threads, refer to the (presently sticky) topic "~arch users: System won't boot with grub-0.97-r5?".
