PostPosted: Wed Aug 20, 2003 3:56 pm    Post subject: cannot emerge sync in vmware Reply with quote

Hi I am running gentoo on vmware on a windows 2000 host

I can ftp and emerge other packages
but I cannot emerge sync

I am behind a firewall and proxy

I am assuming that this is the situation

Is there a way to get the porttree without syncing?
perhaps ftping?

Or can someone perhaps suggest a way to configure my firewall and proxy settings?

Thank you in advance for your help

Paul

Hi Kung,

Have you tried setting the proxy variables? This can be done in a manner such as:

export HTTP_PROXY=my.proxy.server.address:port

from the command prompt, where port is quite often 3128. Hope this helps.

Take it easy,

Ah, a little postscript to the previous:

The fact you're in VMware should make no difference to it; you have, after all, successfully done some of the network stuff. The only VMware-related possibility is that you haven't registered the IP address of the VMware machine with the firewall/proxy (if indeed the firewall/proxy is of this ilk) - if you can't do anything with this, maybe alter the network parameters from within VMware.

thanks I will try that

now heres another problem

I stand to be corrected but this means downloading via http correct?

Is there no way to do this via ftp? because I am limited to the amount of bandwidth I consume via http but unlimited on ftp

and how do I add in a user name and password for the proxy?

Certainly, there's no problem with going via ftp; just swap http_proxy with ftp_proxy and you'll be away.

To pass your username and password to the ftp line, the URL should be in the format:

username:password@my.ftp.proxy.com

(if I recall correctly... feel free to make other suggestions!)

Hope this helps,
