oh and can anyone clarify these to lines in the dmesg output?
Code:
phy0: Failed to initialize wep
b43: probe of ssb0:0 failed with error -12
|
Well sorry can't clarify what these mean, however, I get this on initial boot and have to rmmod b43 followed by a modprobe to get my wireless up. Annoying but at least it works in the end.
Anyone have any ideas why this occurs at boot - something not loaded in time?

well i've solved my problems. the error "b43: probe of ssb0:0 failed with error -12" was being caused because the mac80211 module should be compiled and loaded with rc80211_simple. though i didn't bother trying to fix mac80211, i tried compiling it into the kernel instead of setting it to a module and it worked perfectly. so basically fixing my problem boiled down to seting "Generic IEEE 802.11 Networking Stack (mac80211)" in the kernel to <*> and not <M>.
Now to configure my wireless card to work with my network.

Hi again,
I'm getting this message when I start the device.
Code: |
starting wpa_supplicant on wlan0 ...
ioctl[SIOCSIWAUTH]: Operation not supported
WEXT atuh param 4 value 0x0 - ioctl[SIOCSIWAUTH]: operation not supported
(Then the same thing but for param 5)
|
I also seem to have trouble getting good speeds on the device. Anything I can do to fix this problem. _________________ From Gentoo with love |

Hi,
I've finally taken the plunge to put linux on my laptop after using it at school.
But I'm having trouble setting up my wireless. Below is a run-down of my system and some output.
Notice the quality and signal levels I get when scanning essid mesher.
Yet after running dhcpcd wlan0, iwconfig wlan0 shows mesher with 0 quality and signal levels.
Any help will be much appreciated.
Thanks,
- Matt

Sedrik:
That error is merely cosmetic, don't worry about it. Speed should be pretty decent unless you're a distance from the AP. Note that the rate scaling algorithm starts at 1M and moves up from there, so it may take some time to ramp up to 54Mb. What kind of speeds are you actually seeing?
mboes:
Please ensure that you've compiled b43legacy with debugging, then check dmesg to see if there are any errors with association. _________________ Gentoo PPC FAQ: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml |

I use b43 from gentoo-sources-2.6.24-r2 with bcm4318 card and also have problems with bitrate. It never goes above 1Mb, except almost touching AP. In distance ~10-15m, if I change rate by hand I get maximum usable 11-22Mb. Above transfer dies. <2m from AP I can get 54M with auto rate control. With ndiswrapper I have in both cases maximum 54M (2.5MB/s with nfs transfer and wpa2 enc). But ndiswrapper fails to connect in over 90% of tries with kernels >=2.6.23 and wpa_supplicant.
Lately I tried latest b43 driver from compat-wireles-2.6 (http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download). It is development version, so compiling and installing required editing some files (config.mk and fixing some missing #includes and similar bugs), but after installing b43 and latest firmware (broadcom-wl-4.150.10.5) I finally have what I need. Reliable connecting and good bitrate Transfers are similar to those from ndiswrapper, but sometimes drops a little, i.e. from 2.5MB/s to 2MB/s when copying files.
Installing wasn't simple make install, but hopefully changes will be included in future kernel version of b43 driver.
BTW. I use x86 not PPC arch, but it shouldn't matter. |

The wireless-2.6 (or wireless-compat) versions are the current revison that will be included with the next kernel. There is also an improved rate algorithm that will be included with 2.6.25, so if you're having problems with 2.6.24, try cloning the wireless-2.6 git repo and use that instead. It should perform much better. _________________ Gentoo PPC FAQ: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml |

Any news about packet injection using b43? my card (BCM94311 wlan mini pci) with b43 drivers installed as explained in this thread doesn't permit injection, there's any chance to get it yet or i have to wait?
thank you,

JoseJX:
Sorry for the slow response. I was in the middle of moving to Buenos Aires, Argentina. You responded to my original post (https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?p=4893824#4893824) which is right above.
I checked my kernel configuration, and I'm pretty sure I compiled it with b43legacy with debugging. Below is part of the response from dmesg.
# From dmesg
b43legacy-phy0: Broadcom 4306 WLAN found
b43legacy-phy0 debug: Found PHY: Analog 1, Type 2, Revision 1
b43legacy-phy0 debug: Found Radio: Manuf 0x17F, Version 0x2050, Revision 2
b43legacy-phy0 debug: Radio initialized
b43legacy-phy0 debug: DebugFS (CONFIG_DEBUG_FS) not enabled in kernel config
phy0: Selected rate control algorithm 'simple'
Any ideas on what to do from here?
Thanks, - Matt |

It doesn't look like it's even associating. If you type: "iwlist scan" can you see your AP?
luiss:
It works just fine, it's a feature of the mac80211 wireless stack. _________________ Gentoo PPC FAQ: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml |

Also getting this, and wpa_supplicant spitting out that the auth with AP timed out.
iwlist wlan0 scan works though.
Any ideas?
Edit:
After reading a bit more, it's exactly the same problem as slack---line's. And the same card model, 4306, except that this is not a laptop, but a pci-card from linksys.
And I really need wpa for the security _________________ Is this where I write something clever? |

I seem to receive strong signals, but still can't associate. Although the 'ides' router below is closed, I was still having the same problem as before with routers with no encryption.
Should I be using wpa_supplicant commands instead? Any ideas on what to try next? Thanks.

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone had any more luck with the BCM4311 rev 02 on an AMD64 dual core system? I tried to get it working today on an insecure wireless network and I'm still having no such luck.

Hi,
my sys:
HP G7025EG Laptop
Gentoo 2007.1
kernel 2.6.24-gentoo-r3
-compiled with bcm43xx and b43 modules
BCM4311rev02
After long trying i found the doku with the kernel modules. So i rebuild my kernel and used bcm43xx-fwcutter-006 and version 3.130.20.0 of Broadcom's proprietary driver to cut the firmware into /lib/firmware.
and wow... iwconfig showed me eth1
i can set it up with ifconfig eth1 up.
but then i cant find wlans.
ifconfig shows the card.
when i use iwlist scan and lookup ifconfig again tx bytes raised. rx still 0.
here is my dmesg:
modprobe -r bcm43xx
modprobe bcm43xx
iwconfig shows eth1
dmesg:
Code: | bcm43xx driver

I tried b43. used version 011 of b43-fwcutter and version 4.80.53.0 of Broadcom's proprietary driver.
but after modprobe b43 i dont get eth1 in iwconfig
so b43 works less then bcm43xx
will try ndiswrapper tomorrow but would be happy if one of the other methods will work. as i understood these ways are better.
any suggestions?
thanks in advance! |

Hi,
I have had the same results as you, I can see the card with b43, but I cannot do much other than that. I want to say that I was able to see wireless networks, but I believe that was when I was using an earlier kernel version with ndiswrapper. I unfortunately still couldn't get on because my network used wpa2 and I'm not sure I had it configured properly.
As far as I know, ndiswrapper will not work unless you are using an older kernel version like < 2.6.24. I have tried that with no luck - I don't even see the wireless card.
I wish I could figure the wireless out as I have to plugin anywhere I want to use the Internet.

@walterw: no not the same. in your case b43 works in my case not
i can get only bcm43xx to work half (see above)
@all:
Now i tried all 4 methods again:
b43fwcut11 with 4.80.53.0 wl_apsta.o
b43fwcut11 with 4.150.10.5 wl_apsta_mimo.o
b43fwcut11 with 3.130.20.0.o (legacy)
bcm43xxcut6 with 3.130.20.0.o
the only thing that worked half was bcm43xx (see above)
when i used modprobe b43 i got this dmesg:
Code: |
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:01:00.0[A] -> GSI 16 (level, low) -> IRQ 23
PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:01:00.0 to 64

SOLVED!!!!
1. Applied the kernel patch
2. Rebulid Kernel
3. blacklisted bcm43xx module
4. autostarted ndiswrapper and b43 module
at this point i got the card working with b43 and saw AP´s
but i had to start wpa_sup and ip settings maually each time.
so followed the gentoo handbook for autostarting network devices.
now it automaticly brings the adapter up at boot, starts wpa_supp and uses the settings from /etc/conf.d/net |

Hi all,
I upgraded to the newest kernel available, 2.6.25-r1, and was hoping my wireless would magically work. Unfortunately, I must still be missing something as even after upgrading the firmware to match the new kernel, I cannot see any access points.
Has anyone else here tried upgrading to the new kernel? If you have managed to get your wireless working on 2.6.25-r1, please let me know.

Yes, I'm using 2.6.25 just fine. Unfortunately, you didn't tell us much about which bcm device you're using, which driver you're using, whether you compiled in b43 and b43legacy, etc. Were there any dmesg messages? Do you have a wifi button on your machine? Details! :) _________________ Gentoo PPC FAQ: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml |

one question about b43-fwcutter : i had to reinstall gentoo on my alubook and i picked the firmware as suggested from http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/bcm43xx, but in order to get it to the right place y had to add the -w switch ( with /lib/firmware of course), otherwise it would be extracted to $PWD. Maybe i´m wrong but i´m quite sure the last time i used gentoo´s b43-fwcutter it automagically extracted to the right place.
no biggie of course, but is this the default way it works now ? If yes, i think the instructions on the first page have to be changed to reflect this.

Hello, I'm Yet Another Unfortunate Who Can't Make This Work.

and the relevant LED comes on if I call "ifconfig wlan0 up", but "iwlist wlan0 scan" claims there are no scan results, even though there's an access point all of three feet away on the shelf above the desk. Furthermore, running the sequence "ifconfig wlan0 up"-"iwlist wlan0 scan"-"ifconfig wlan0 down" generates the following:
Code: | karasu linux # dmesg | grep b43

I don't like the look of that error message, but I can't figure out what it pertains to so that I can fix it and, hopefully, get the card to work. :( Is there something obvious and stupid that I'm missing? |

Saludos,
After little sucess with the older bcm43xx I tried now to play with b43 on 2.6.25-gentoo-r4 (firmware 410.2160).
The kernel seems to like the driver and the firmware, but when I try to "ifconfig wlan0 up" I get an error in dmesg:
Quote: |
b43-phy1: Loading firmware version 410.2160 (2007-05-26 15:32:10)
b43-phy1 debug: Chip initialized
b43-phy1 ERROR: The machine/kernel does not support the required 30-bit DMA mask
|
Googling returns a couple of references to the bcm43xx-dev mailing list. However, I cannot make too much sense of those messages.
Maybe I misconfigured the kernel?? Everything else seems to work, though.
btw, the machine is an imacG5
if anyone has a vague idea what it could be it would be very much appreciated
cheers,
izzu |
