Ok, with TexturedVideo activated mplayer -vo xv works (at last!) and the cpu usage when playing HD videos has dropped dramatically, but... the videos are a bit too bright, and the colors seem washed (when compared to -vo x11). Also, the subtitles are blurred and semi-transparent :?. Anyone else with this problem?

Nobody else has the problem I mentioned above? This is what I mean. The colors with xv are worse than with x11, and everything seems blurrier (especially the subtitles).

At least i do not have this problem Fran, with XV i see the subtitles a little transparent ( almost nothing ) and looks like yours on "-vo x11" and the colors looks the same in both XV & X11.

Hi All:

I got tired at having XINE lockup my machine when I tried to play certain avi files so I did the following:
1. re-emerged xine-lib, no joy,
2. Downgraded to ati-drivers 8.3.3.6, no joy,
3. re-emerged xine-lib, no joy...

Ok, so I did the big tamali...
emerge -pvD xine-lib

and one by one started ftom the top. Problem is, one package was blocking another so I removed it and politely ignored the warnings that is could REALLY break my system as I thought the one that would get upgraded would fix it all.

So now, I rebooted and guess what?
I have no mount command so the boot process stops.

Ok, what package has the mount command in it and how to I boot from CD to install the mount command into my /bin directory?

Messy, messy, messy, but this is how you learn.

:)

It is part of sys-apps/util-linux. Download the package for the appropriate architecture from tinderbox, unpack it into the root directory, then emerge -1 sys-apps/util-linux.

Cool. Ok, great advice. Here is what I did:
1. Booted from a kubuntu amd64 CD,
2. Made the directories /mnt/linux and /mnt/d,
3. mounted /dev/sda8 (root) and /dev/sda6, FAT32 partition with the util-linux on it,
4. Changed the permissions to read-write on /mnt/linux,
5. Copied the file over.
6. rebooted into gentoo,
7. When the error no mount command found, I enter the root password and am in the root directory,
8. I try to unpack the file but the file system is read-only....

and here is where I am stuck. I tried chmod 666 / and chmod 666 /root to no avail. The only way I know how to change this to a read write file system is to umount and then mount again but I have no mount command.

Any ideas?

Cheers,
john

Thank you for this. I booted form the gentoo CD and was able to do this. Am now doing a massive revdep-rebuild.

Thank you again.

Cheers,

@Insanity5902: I was finally able to get compiz working on my R580 thanks to your suggestions and recommendation of fusion-icon... thanks! Was also able to solve my VLC issues.

Those of you still having problems with compiz, fusion-icon is an excellent troubleshooting tool. Since it's not in portage the easiest way to grab it is via the desktop-effects overlay. Once it's installed, you can run it by typing
Code:
fusion-icon
in a terminal, watch for any error messages, and start diagnosing the problem from there.

So to the question at hand...has anyone gotten compiz working simultaneously on dual independent displays using fglrx?

The reason I wasn't able to get compiz working for so long was that I had a second independent display enabled. I was able to use fusion-icon to determine the error I was getting, where compiz locks up the X server when both screens are enabled.
Code:
compiz (core) - Fatal: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is missing
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz (core) - Fatal: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is missing
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 1
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0
Hardware acceleration is enabled on both screens, and I can run compiz on each display independently, but when I try running it on the second display X crashes and I'm back at the logon screen. Since other users have run into this, I tried Aikidoka69's trick of preloading libGL.so.1.2 (tried both the xorg and ati libraries) but no luck there. Currently, I have displays connected to crt1 and crt2 on my AIW, and multiple devices listed in my xorg.conf. If I comment out the second device and amend my first device like so
Code:
Option "EnableMonitor" "crt1,crt2"
Option "ForceMonitors" "crt1,crt2,notv"
compiz runs on both screens, but the second display will only work in a panning clone mode no higher than 800x600.

I did find another thread where it seems someone accomplished what I'd like to, but no action on it. Interesting effect tho... heh.

In the meantime, if anyone has been reluctant to go compiz due to a dual screen configuration, I'm currently able to use compiz on my primary display only and still have individual desktops at different resolutions by running
Code:
export LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 && compiz --replace --sm-disable --ignore-desktop-hints ccp --indirect-rendering --only-current-screen &
Hope this helps someone.

PostPosted: Wed Apr 16, 2008 5:59 am    Post subject: X still crashing when I play a video Reply with quote

Hi All:

I have been having problems with X playing vids since I upgraded ati-drivers to be able to use google earth. I've gone back and forth on drivers but 2 days ago had enough and did
emerge -pvD xine-lib

and manually upgraded everything except my kernal source and headers. 4 revdep-rebuilds later, I still get a big list but nothing is a t the bottom.

Initially, X would hang my entire machine when a video was played with Xine. Now at least, X just crashes which is an improvement.
Here is my system:

At this stage logging to settle down the Xserver so that it stops crashing after which I'll work on optomising.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Next release is out 8.4 (8.476)

https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/catalyst_84_linux.html

Seems there are less on the known issues list.

renaming the ebuild to 8.476 and editing the download to download 8-4 works (don't forget to copy the files/<folder> to the new version)

Seems to be a bit smoother. Moving firefox 3 around with wobbly windows doesn't seem to be as jerky.

I have tried the new 8-4 drivers. When I ran fgl_fglxgears to see how much faster they were it crashed my computer. Have you had this problem? I am using an ATI X700 mobility radeon.

no crash for me, but it still flickers

@gr0x0rd: I'm glad you got it working. I believe running Dual Head is a known issue with the new driver base. Not sure what all it entails but I've seen it on their known issue list since October. The 8.5 release actually includes a whole new file, so who knows what is instore for us next month :)

This thread is almost dead (almost, since I am posting now :) ). I wanted to update people that the new driver (8-6) has been out for some time now. I have X1270, and this 8-6 driver compiles into 2.1.7659 Release driver.

I have not specified any "Options" in my xorg.conf (like TexturedVideo "on") and everything works fine. This option changes NO CPU usage for me.

I don't know how to do "suspend to ram", but as such standy and suspend both work - xv is working great (although with a little flickering, since I am using Composite). Using uvesafb, framebuffer is also working (although colourless :o)

Disable composite extension makes life good :)

Compiz doesn't work (says I don't have GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap even though glxinfo lists it. Both glxinfo and fglxinfo print appropriate messages and then segfault.

:)

Do you guys have different experience? Am I missing something?

To get compiz to work, you have to export some variables. I don't remember, I use fusion-icon. It is in the desktop-effects overlay, or you can grab an ebuild out of bugzilla for it.

It will automatically detect what it needs to do and run compiz/export variables to get it to run. (This is all assuming your xorg.conf is setup (composite and AIGLX are on, not sure if the other options are required)

As for textured video, I believe 8.4 or 8.5 it was set to on as default.
