|
|
I've been trying to install Gentoo on a USparc 10 clone. This machine has an adapter in it to be able to use a PS/2 mouse and keyboard. After a number of attempts, I have managed to get the CD to boot. I took the 'gentoo' option. and it successfully loaded the ramdisk, and ran gentoo. But...when I attempt to login, my keyboard mapping is incorrect, i.e. the letter 'o' is the F4 key, 'a' is 6 on the keypad, etc. I've tried using 'gentoo KEYMAP=/usr/share/keymaps/i386/qwerty/us.map.gz', but this doesn't seem to have any effect. All the documentation seems to indicate that you can switch keymaps after you boot, but it's kind of hard to type in the commands needed to do so without a functional keyboard.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. _________________ "We're through being cool! Eliminate the ninnies and the twits!" - DEVO |

I just tried it. No soap. No keymap menu shown, and keymapping still bad at logon prompt. _________________ "We're through being cool! Eliminate the ninnies and the twits!" - DEVO |

Fferret,
Thanks for filing a bug for this problem:
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22714
Because of the unique configuration you have, I don't know if a solution can be found, but thanks for the info and the bug. _________________ Blademan |

Um. I know of at least 10 more machines like this one, Blade. And if you want to use a KVM, it's pretty much a necessity of you have other PS/2 machines. _________________ "We're through being cool! Eliminate the ninnies and the twits!" - DEVO |

hey guys,
I've got an idea on how to fix this, but it will require making a new ISO image to handle it. Basically I'm thinking of implementing something close to what the x86 cd does for this, which is allow you to choose one part of the way through the boot process. This is still in the "it's rolling around in my head but I haven't started looking into it" phase. I probably wont' have any time before next week, but I'll keep ya posted. |

Hi folks, great post + great forum. I'm running around with the same challenge here. I'm going to try to install Gentoo using a Sun keyboard/mouse and then switch back to my KVM PS/2 setup when I'm finished. Is this difficult to do post-install? _________________ - L202 |

I've got around this on USB type 6 keyboards with two different methods. A PS/2 should be the same.
1) If you use 'gentoo serial' at boot the sunkeymap isn't loaded.
2) If you want to mess with the iso, replace the cdrom/loopy/share/keymap/sun/sunkeymap.gz with the us_map.gz found in keymap/i386/qwerty/. Rename the us_map to sunkeymap. You can try to get your new cd to boot, but it is just easier to use a normal livecd to boot up to the SILO prompt then swap in your new cd.
Hmm...that doesn't seem to make much sense. If you need more instructions, let me know. I'll give you the step-by-step.
To switch back to the PS/2 post-install, just edit your /etc/rc.conf, change the keymap to "us", reboot, and replace with the PS/2 keyboard. |
