Hallo,

Gentoo Entwickler Grant Goodyear hat vor knapp einer Woche eine Portierung von Portage auf FreeBSD und OpenBSD angekündigt [1].

Ich, mit Interesse an Gentoo und Portage als auch an FreeBSD und Ports , habe das ganze vorhin mal ausprobiert. Kurzum: Im Moment nicht brauchbar und kein Meilenstein (auch kein Kiesel) auf dem Weg zu Gentoo/BSD, was ja irgendwann mal das Ziel sein soll.

Um Portage unter FreeBSD als Ersatz für die Ports_richtig_ ans laufen zu bekommen müsste man es um die Pakete des FreeBSD Basissystems beschneiden, effektiv macht der dann nur noch marginale Unterschied zwischen den Ports und Portage einen Wechsel überflüssig, zumal ich ganz subjektiv die Ports für performanter halte. Wer mal beobachtet hat, wie lange Portage und wielange Ports Abhängigkeiten berechnet weiss, was ich meine ...

Den Ansatz, Portage in Teilen unter FreeBSD ans laufen zu kriegen, halte ich für grundsätzlich falsch, sinnvoller wäre ein FreeBSD From Scratch mit FreeBSD Kernel und dann kompletter Portage Implementierung. Die jetzige "Rumfrickelei" bringt nix, Anwendern schon mal gar nicht und dass die Entwickler ihrem Gentoo/BSD damit näherkommen halte ich für äußerst fragwürdig.

Meine Meinung deckt sich mit der des Entwicklers:
"anybody wanting to play with portage on a bsd has a lot of work to do"

In meinen Augen momentan eine Zeitverschwendung. Man sollte zunächst erstmal zusehen, dass man portage erwachsen bekommt, bevor man anfängt es nach links und rechts zu portieren.

Genau, und vor allem denke ich nicht, dass *BSD Portage unbedingt braucht, da sie ja eh ihre Ports haben.
