what is the command to make a bz2 archive of my partitions?

Try "bzcat"... it comes with any version of bzip2.

You can type the following:

[root@host /root]#bzcat /dev/hda1 > backup_hda1.bz2
to backup the first partition of the first hard drive to the file "backup_hda1.bz2".

Note that it's probably not a good idea to have that partition mounted at the time! So you may want to have a second partition to be running from that is large enough to hold a backup of the first one.

What I would do is boot from the gentoo CD and then mount some type of network drive (is this possible?) and then run this command... so that nothing on the HD is mounted. Put the backup on the network drive.
