in case anyone is trying to get this to work, here's some shots
with a few settings showing that work for me...
this is with:
gaming-sources
(2.4 kernel, gentoo-sources works fine but gives me problems with lm_sensors)
DirectFB-0.9.19-r1
xdirectfb-1.0_rc5
you definatly need "desktop-buffer-mode=backsystem" in directfbrc
maybe the 2.6 riva drivers will work better, but so far they seem buggy
i can use 85Hz, but the 76Hz works just fine for me...

In case someone is trying to get this working, here are some shots? They are lovely pictures man, but its not much of a tip/trick.
Is there a website that helped you? Did you figure it out yourself? Could you please post any information you have (besides screenshots) so that other people can get this up and running too.
Thanks,
Chris. |

ok...
emerge /usr/portage/dev-libs/DirectFB-0.9.19-r1.ebuild
emerge /usr/portage/x11-base/xdirectfb/xdirectfb-1.0_rc5.ebuild
(may or may not need xfree installed i don't know)
edit /etc/X11/xinit/dfbserverrc with nano or whatever you like
add -enableRoot -displayLayer 00 -defaultOpacity 220 -unfocusedOpacity 180 -enableUnfocused
now create a new file .directfbrc in your home directory or in /etc (no . if in /etc)
add these settings to the file
system=fbdev
depth=24
pixelformat=ARGB
desktop-buffer-mode=backsystem
vsync-none
man directfbrc for more listings on settings you can use, the pixelformat works for my geforce3, leaving that one out should default to something that works for pretty much anything, the important settings are the desktop-buffer-mode=backsystem to give you decent speed, and the vsync-none saved me from alot of lockups, there is also a setting:
sync
which flushes the disk cache, which can help if it does lock up on you...
and then after all that, run startxdfb to try it out |

The libs are, I.E. the 4 datafiles that Xfree uses are also used by xdirectfb. |

What kinda of speed do you get with the directfb setup? Is it worth using it on a production desktop system or is it simply eye candy? _________________ Hey--hey how are ya? |

There's no openGL support, but as a desktop its speedy, however still being under development, its not entirely stable, so i'd keep it more as a toy right now.. the last time i tried the 2.6 kernel driver had alot of acceleration enhancements, but it also has alot of bugs to work out..
it starts up quick, but X starts up pretty quickly for me if i use the nvidia drivers.. |
