I attempted to emerge OpenOffice. It says I need to upgrade to gcc-3.04 or 3.1, then goes on to say that 3.04 was actually better. I have been perusing this forum and get the impression that upgrading may not be all that simple. Or could create conflicts and whack existing programs.
Is there anything I should know before I upgrade? Why when I do emerge -s gcc I only get 2.95? Any pointers on moving to 3.04 or 3.1 would be appreciated.

I upgraded to gcc-3.0.4 and I haven't noticed any problems (yet). You have to do the following, 'cuz I tried a plain "emerge gcc" and it of course didn't work:
> ebuild /usr/portage/sys-devel/gcc/gcc-3.0.4-r6.ebuild merge
Note: emerging OpenOffice takes a LONG time and a LOT of space to build (like 2GB, rough estimate. I had 1.2GB and the build process used up at least 90%!!). If your PORTAGE_TMPDIR is too small, change it in /etc/make.conf to one with a lot of space. _________________ ____
