How to interact with suspend and standby without apmd?

Hi,

I'am a bit confused since I don't really understand whats going on here with the power management. I don't have apmd running ( only kapmd - wich I don't know what it is). Still I can suspend the box with "amp -s". That's ok so far - but I don't know how to configure this stuff. If the box is idle for some time it goes into the suspend mode. Thats annoying because it does this even if something is still runing (e.g dvdrip).
How can I stop/change this? Maybe someone can point me to some decent documentation.
