problems writing to floppy

i can mount my floppy (type msdos)
i can read files (created on windows machine) from the floppy and copy/move them to my hard drive
but when i try writing a file to the floppy it seems to work and i can do a ls and get a listing of files, but they are not really there. i take the floppy to a windows machine and nothing is there. i reinsert the floppy into my gentoo machine and do an ls again and nothing.

thats probably because of the caching. There is a command to flush the cache, but I cant remember it right now. Unmounting the floppy should help though.

try the command "sync" after you write to your floppy.

Did you try the following? ->

mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

You must always unmount a medium before removing it. That goes for CDs, USB devices and especially for floppy disks. It is tempting not to do so, though, as the eject button on a fdd works mechanically.

You can use the sync option when mounting, the effect of which is that physical writing to the medium takes place when you say so and not when your OS thinks it's best.

Lastly, if you prefer an MS-DOS style of working with floppy disks use mtools.
