installing only parts of a package

is there a way to only install certain parts of a package...i.e. I have a mysql server running on my server (where I want it). I have gentoo on my workstation. I only want the -dev -libs and -common parts of mysql so client apps can connect to the remote server. is this possible? How would I go about doing this?
