Hey Guys!
I have some of my favorite songs in my iPod that I want to transfer into my computer. I have tried many times by different methods but I am unable to transfer. Do you people have any idea that can help me out? Your suggestion will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Have you tried gtkpod? Amarok? Can you successfully mount your iPod? Winpod? Macpod?
Don't believe the "n00b" under my name.

If you have a 5th gen (iPod Video) or earlier, people have had success with gtkpod and such. If you've got a newer one (iPod Touch, iPod Classic), you're basically screwed. Not only is there no support for it, there is likely to not be any support for a very long (forever?) time, due to stupid measures done by Apple to force people to use iTunes (encrypted DRM stuff in hardware which is so-far considered unbreakable, just ask the Rockbox guys).

Of course, you could always try to get iTunes running under Wine. I have no idea if this will let you use a 6th gen iPod under Linux, but that'd be your best chance by far.

Since libgpod-0.6.0 iPod classic and iPod Touch is supported. Even artwork is functional. More here: http://amarok.kde.org/wiki/Media_Device:IPod

Just ouf of interest. Doesn't the allmighty ipod offer an option to be mounted as a mass storage device?

Yes, the correct way to interface with an iPod is as a USB mass storage device.

Can you actually mount it as a standard mass storage device, just to like /media/something? Or is some FUSE magic going on with libgpod to make a virtual mount point, or something like that?

My X5 works as a standard mass storage device, just mounting to /media. Although it wasn't my only reason for going with an alternative to iPod, I was under the impression that you can't just mount it like that, needed to use some iTunes-y interface with an app using libgpod (although the FUSE idea sounds feasible).

The old generation shuffle, which I have, doesn't.

Ridiculous.
Gentoo is the stick-shift of Linux.
You work it manually, it has somewhat better performance, but it's really for the fun of it.

while you might mount it as mass storage, the database is not a simple file tree on any ipod I've ever seen (grant it that is only 3 different ones). So you still need special code to interface to it. AKA, it is not transparent like my sansa (which rebuilds its internal database when I disconnect it, as opposed to requiring special software to do it).

I'll admit the apple way makes more sense from an engineering stand point (because processing is done on the host), but not from a usability/transportability/non-vendor-lockin one for me. Supposedly there is mtp support on linux, but I've never looked into it because I havn't needed to.
emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "moo"
