Many of the posts in this thread argue that the gentoo wiki is not part of the gentoo project. Nevertheless, when the wiki is down it is clear, by the messages in the forums, that people are using it. I agree that the information in the wiki is not totally accurate. Nevertheless, as a user, I am aware of that, and I have been able to find valuable information there, specially when I need a starting point into an issue.
The wiki covers many topics that are not included in the gentoo documentation, and the information in the wiki can be considered as a draft as to create accurate documentation to be included in the official gentoo documentation. If the wiki did not existed it would have been much difficult for me to be able to use gentoo.
Therefore, if gentoo wiki is not part of the gentoo project, what needs to be done so it is considered part of the project? |

for me the wiki was a necessity. no gentoo-wiki --> still debian user, i personally think that would be pitty for me...
anyway: you can use google chache, there is a link for text-only copies which are stored by google. since, nobody is doomed to rot

Yeah, finishing my Secure OpenLDAP, PDC, Samba server project would have been nice. Or at least figuring out a quirk in the current config/s(either slapd.conf, ldap.conf, another and/or a combination of them) would have been nice yesterday or today. |

Thanks meadow for the tip on the text-only cache! I never realized that was available. I've known about google's cache, but when ever I clicked on it it would n't load anything but a blank page. You have to click on the link in the line "This cached page may reference images which are no longer available. Click here for the cached text only" on the page that comes up after you click the cache link from google's main page Works now! Thanks a lot for this tip!!!
Cheers, Andrew |

People bring up very good points, but:
Whether the wiki is "official" Gentoo doctrine or not is is beside the point. I posted hoping that someone would spot it who knows someone, who has a neighbor, who worked at the same home depot, next to a friend's house, who knows the cell number of someone who could do something about it -- or at least maybe post back an ETA for those of us who rely upon it (if it is already being addressed). It is possible that those who maintain the wiki may not be aware that it is down.
I posted just to raise awareness. If I spot a problem that is bound to affect many people -- any problem -- and don't say anything to anyone about it, then I am not doing my part as a member of the Gentoo community. Its all for the common good .
BTW -- it is still down _________________ To look without without looking within is like looking without without looking at all. |

Why, or why it is still down ?
Do you know when it is recovering ? Or whom to ask at least ?
If it doesn't go up I am doomed. |

Yes, still down.
At least there is a message there today saying they are having a Hard drive problem.
Maybe if the wiki was part of the official Gentoo they would have access to more reliable hosting?....
And maybe also, it would be easier to organise correcting the howtos that have errors if it was part of the official Gentoo. Although I presume its nothing stopping people who find errors in the Howtos to correct them, wether they are "official" or not. |

You mean like
http://anonsvn.gentoo.org
http://anoncvs.gentoo.org
http://packages.gentoo.org
Clearly *gentoo.org does not guarantee anything |

Hi,
I am relatively new to Gentoo, so wasn't aware of the sites, 123bang.
I was thinking of:
http://gentoo-wiki.com/Main_Page
http://gentoo-portage.com/
Actually that last one comes up with some "Mint:gentoo Linux Wiki" login at the moment. Presumably it just means disabled pending new harddrive.
Mons
EDIT: Just check your links. I get the point. Maybe the official Gentoo needs more reliable hosting too... |

Both sites are down again. I noticed a few days ago there was a news post on gentoo-wiki.com about the database having been cracked into recently. Hopefully that doesn't have anything to do with the downtime. _________________ "Your voice is like the sound of sirens to a house on fire..." -The Alkaline Trio |

Wow, how many times has this thread been revived?
Personally I think half of the information on the wiki is silly and can be done better or more organized. I may look at some of the articles as basic guidelines, but following most of them step by step us just ugly. Half of the time it uses outdated workarounds with no notification that the step is only necessary in 'Case X'. _________________ Steve - Semper Fi |

So what? I have used Gentoo Wiki articles as a basic guidelines for configuring a number of things for quite awhile. This isn't the Ubuntu Wiki where it needs to hold your hand. Gentoo users are more naturally inclined to figure things out. It helps to know in what direction you should be heading when you're like "hey, i want to do this, but where do I start?". Also, it happens to have the only very complete article on configuring my ASUS notebook which I decided to rebuild with Gentoo, again, and then I find out the site is down Once again, I've done this stuff enough times, but it's helpful to get a bit of a shove in the right direction if you haven't done it in awhile.
So, when are these sites going to be back up? The downtime is a bit annoying. |

The guys should have a mirror somewhere for us to use when official gentoo-wiki is down for maintenance _________________ If it moves, it needs an ebuild.

You'd think with as popular as their site(s) is they'd have at least one other server for redundancy. |

And where would they get the money for that? Unless your offering to donate money to whoever runs the sites. |

There are other options besides getting a whole new server. Besides, for something that we all use, I am sure they could get some donations. |

I'd be more than happy to offer my server as a backup, I just dont know who runs the wiki and gentoo-portage. |

It is, according to AboutUs, run by Mike Valstar. The mail adress is given as webmaster@gentoo-wiki.org (NOT com!).
It might be on another server, so maybe it works?
