I have a Dell latitude cs 400. I'm trying to figure out how to use my touchpad (connected to PS/2) and a external mouse (USB) working at the same time in X windows, so I can use one or the other, and not have X scream at me when i don't have the external mouse plugged in.

I can get them working individually by changing XF86Config everytime. But if anyone could get them working at the same time please tell me how, thank you.

For the PS/2 mouse you probably have something similar to this in the config
Code:
Section "InputDevice"
   Identifier  "Mouse0"
   Driver      "mouse"
   Option       "Protocol" "PS/2"
   Option       "Device" "/dev/mouse"
EndSection

now add a new InputDevice section having a different identifier, maybe something like this one (it's my M$ laptop mouse)
Code:
Section "InputDevice"
   Identifier  "Mouse1"
   Driver      "mouse"
   Option       "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
   Option       "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
   Option       "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

then the trick to get those both working at the same time is to add Mouse1 to the ServerLayout section with "SendCoreEvents" as parameter
Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
   Identifier     "XFree86 Configured"
   Screen      0  "Screen0" 0 0
   InputDevice    "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
   InputDevice    "Mouse1" "SendCoreEvents"
   InputDevice    "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection
