When I run emerge --update world, emerge wants to install several packages that I _do not_ need, such as gnupg and svgalib. Why?
Neither of these two are in the $USE variable (AFAIKT anyway).

svgalib is affected by the svga USE variable and gnupg is part of crypt. The reason it wants to install them is that another package must have been updated to now use these USE variables.
