Hey, I love gentoo, or what I have experienced of it so far but I am having trouble with internet connection sharing  Here is my situation:

My dad has a pc that is running windows 2000 pro :x that connects to the internet through his starband 360 modem. The modem is connected to one of his two lan cards. I want to share this connection on my laptop, which is a dell inspiron 4100 while running gentoo 1.4 P3 optimized. i installed Gentoo by following the guide on this site but couldn't get any of the internet stuff to work so I used the stage 3 and GRP stuff. It installed fine and though some searching I got xf86 and kde to run on it, but I still cant get the internet connection to share. I have been using a cross over cable to connect to the other lan port on my dad's computer, and wondered if that had anything to do with it. Also, I tried to use analog X's proxy server on my dad's machine but to no avail. I am sure I set up the IPs and everything correctly but it still didn't work. The one thing I cant do is just click the enable internet connection sharing box in the TCP/IP properties on my dad's machine because when I do that something goes wrong with the satilite and it stops working on his machine. So, my question is if anyone has had experience working with the same type of problem I am facing would you please give me advice?

I'll be sure to check back in a day or so so I can try to answer any questions that might help you help me about my system or my father's.

Shouldn't. In the absence of a hub/switch, you can use a cross-over cable to connect two machines together.

Sounds like that is the problem. The Windows 2000 machine needs to share the Internet connection.

Can you elaborate on the problem and your setup? What IP addresses are you using? Before you click the ICS box in Windows 2000, do an "ipconfig /all" and the same afterwards. Anything differences? What does "ifconfig" show on your Gentoo box? Can you ping from your laptop to his PC?
