hi all,
I've looked all over but have yet to find any sort of general guideline on how long it will take to emerge this or that package, given a certain configuration. I'm not looking for spot-on to the minute, more like "Emerging apache on a PIII with 128M RAM will take about 1/2 hour", that sort of thing.
Does such a set of info exist? If not, would this be useful to others besides myself? I'm sure collecting this sort of data would be a large undertaking, so I don't know if it'd be even feasible.

The tools to track this information are there. Yet no website or anything has a place where you can submit this info.. (idea anyone???).. I think it would be a great thing to happen though.
for example one of the scripts..
Code: |
dylix@reaction:~/scripts> ./compileTime.py gaim
Scanning file /var/log/emerge.log for gaim
Date HH:MM:SS Package
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
15/07/03 00:04:07 net-im/gaim-0.63-r1
17/08/03 00:03:53 net-im/gaim-0.67
17/08/03 00:05:01 net-im/gaim-0.66-r3
19/08/03 00:04:36 net-im/gaim-0.67

ooh. i stand corrected, there is a script called "gest" that will display about how long it will take to emerge something, but only if you've previously emerged it.. another example
Code: | dylix@reaction:~/scripts> emerge xmms -p | ./gest
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:
Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild N ] media-sound/xmms-1.2.7-r20 Estimate: 3m18s
Total estimated update time: 3 minutes and 18 seconds |
and if you have not emerged the package.. nothing
Code: | dylix@reaction:~/scripts> emerge fluxbox -p | ./gest
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:
Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild N ] x11-misc/commonbox-utils-0.4
[ebuild N ] x11-themes/commonbox-styles-0.6
[ebuild N ] x11-wm/fluxbox-0.1.14-r1 |

Very cool, thank you dylix! I'll have to check out the idea of gathering this info into a repository, as it would be very helpful for those such as myself who haven't got a 1Ghz+ machine and literally end up waiting all day for some emerges to finish. |
