Trouble with Belkin 4-port powered hub

I bought a Belkin USB 2.0 4-port hub. Looks like the model number may be F5U234 Rev.3
It is has either external power supply or power from the bus. I plug it in and it initially works.
An entry shows up for it in lsbus, the correct LED lamps are lit on the device, and devices plugged
into the hub also show up in lsusb.

First problem was that I cannot access the logitech webcam with it plugged into the hub. Any program
that tries to access the camera (vlc) initially communicates (the LED on the webcam illuminates), but then
loses communication. My canon digital camera seemed to work OK with the hub, but my wife's Ipod does not.
Again, the ipod initially operates, but programs such as amarok will quickly hang when accessing the ipod.
I've tried the port with either external power or the bus power with no luck.

Am I missing a kernel config option? I found a reference in a forums search to such an issue, but
the poster didn't give the kernel option that I need to set. I'm using kernel 2.6.23-r3 with an i686 install on
an AMD athlon 64x2. Thanks in advance.

As time goes on i've seen more and more flaky usb hardware, specifically hubs (both external and on-board). How well does the usb hub work on other machines/windows/?

Also is EHCI being used properly? Does the device work with/without the hub or power adaptor on the hub (if it has one?)

USB hubs should virtually be plug and play, but I guess I've seen more than my fair share of shoddy hardware...

What am I supposed watching?

there is no kernel option for usb hubs
if your usb devices work plugged in directly (vs. plugged into the hub), the kernel is configured correctly.
sounds like a shoddy hub, or shoddy cable connecting the hub to the computer.

USB devices work fine without the hub. Unfortunately, it looks like a case of
flaky hardware. Any suggestions for a powered 4-port hub that works with
linux?

Thanks.
