I just assembled a brand new box with gentoo from stage 1. However, from the very beginning, my nic has been getting about 15% packet loss, even to hosts on the LAN. I have a Realtek 8139, a fairly common card, and I'm using the 2.4.19-gentoo-r7 kernel. I've swapped out the wiring, and it's not that. Short of it being a bad card, is there anything else I should try before I go buy a new one? I don't have another PCI NIC on hand to swap in.

Have you run tcpdump or anything to see if there are any errors that can be debugged on the network - to verify it is a nic and not a switch or hub?

check also your ifconfig

RX packets:65700 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:9359 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0

if you get errors frames or carriers...

I had this once, and a replacement NIC solved the Problem (the old NIC worked for years...)

Yeah, it ended up just being a bad NIC. Bah, it only cost $6 to begin with.
