After Alt+Ctrl+Backsp. Xorg change resolution to VGA

After migrating my gentoo installation from PC to laptop I ran into problem described above - when I kill my Xsession, resolution in _all new Xsessions_ changes to VGA. What could cause a problem like this?

did you connect the monitor *after* xdm started?

you must logout of a session so the session properties saved by session manager.

The problem is - I experiment to find right xorg.config, so I have to restart Xorg somehow and then - VGA!!
padoor: once Xorg has started o.k., why should I save something??

you are not manually saving . every session of x is saved in its config folder like .kde,.gnome,.xfce etc.
the session usually follows the last config of the desktop.
if you dont have any saved session default xorg.conf is taken start a new session.
X -configure should provide you a xorg.conf.new in your home.
copy it to /etc/X11/xorg.conf to have more control over X.

alt ctl F1 will get you to vt1
there you stop the x server and restart -- i think is better than alt ctl bkspace repeatedly getting you back to vt1

Unfortunately, my problem has not been solved yet.

1. How to restart Xorg from vt1? If I type: /etc/init.d/xdm restart, it restarts in VGA again.
2. By default, when I start xdm, something tries to restart it after each crash - I don't like that - it would be better, if X just stops and I can do startx later (and, if session has been locked, it sould logout). As to me, it looks like there is no way to stop Xorg, if xdm has started it, but there are cases, when I need to stop it and start later!

I really want to solve this, because, if I have to restart comp. after each xorg.conf modification, it waste so much time and it feels like I have absolutely no control of what is happening.

#/etc/init.d/xdm stop X will stop
#/etc/init.d/xdm start will start it
i have not tried restart.
you can stop and start manually.
for making changes in xorg.conf stop X and start again after making changes.
some critical changes like video drivers etc will need reboot.

Oh, no.

I could stop xdm, but, there was quick blink of VGA and error message "would send signal 15 to ..".
Only when tried to stop again, it gave output "stopped". All later efforts gave me same VGA.

What additional information should I provide?

do not stop xdm while in X ...i think you are just killing the X from xterm or konsole
alt ctl F1 or any vt only you must stop xdm

shutdown -F now
after it comoletes fsck of all mounts run revdep-rebuild
if the X still gives problem emerge xorg-server again
followed with xf86-input-mouse, evdev
how vga comes up have you mentioned it in any conf files?
do you mean there is no X coming up?
alt ctl F1--F6 brings up vt1--6?

fsck can't find errors. revdep-rebuild: all ok.

Dammit, I renamed xorg.conf -> xorg.conf.1 and everything seams to be ok even trackpoint scrolling works.
This is better. I'll try some further experiments later. Isn't this ridiculous - I tried so hard to write that config file! *****.

xorg-x11 new ones dont make xorg.conf .
it can work automatically selecting your hardware.
only in case of special settings for drivers and other input devices you need to have a xorg.conf.
