Mplayer has not updated their stable mplayer in a long long time, and the guys at #mplayer tell every user to use the CVS, so I think Gentoo should have a Mplayer-current ebuild which would be masked and could be used for people looking to upgrade mplayer.
Reasons to use CVS:
Svq1 support (soreson)
fixed /dev/video support for viewing and recording tv shows with a tv card (gotta love using your computer as a tivo)
Bugfixes!

I want the ebuild in portage by 4pm today or you're *ALL* Fired.
