|
|
Hi,
I haven't been able to get printing working with my hp deskjet 656C.
I have read several different accounts of usb printer problems, but am at a loss for where to start in order to resolve it.
From http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/printing-howto.xml
After modprobing I cannot even cat test.txt > /dev/usb/lp0
In fact lp0 does not even exist ?? I have set up cups and it does not complain but it does not print.
Thanks.
Here is some output from dmesg:
usb.c: registered new driver usbdevfs
usb.c: registered new driver hub
PCI: Setting latency timer of device 00:06.0 to 64
intel8x0: clocking to 47409
0: NVRM: AGPGART: unable to retrieve symbol table
spurious 8259A interrupt: IRQ7.
usb.c: registered new driver usblp
printer.c: v0.11: USB Printer Device Class driver
parport0: PC-style at 0x378 [PCSPP,TRISTATE]
lp0: using parport0 (polling).
uhci.c: USB Universal Host Controller Interface driver v1.1 |

Have you checked the printer status in the cups web interface thingy? _________________ www.iamthepenguin.com |

try passing as a kernel-option when you boot.
Did the trick for me
The problem is not cups if lp0 doesnt even show up in /dev/usb. It's some problem with USB and APIC (note: APIC not ACPI !). _________________ e = pi = 3

Thank you for all replies.
I did try noapic=yes, but with no luck.
lp0 is still not there.
Cheers! |

You will also need to install the usb root hub kernel module.
try,
modprobe usbcore
modprobe usb-uhci or uchi (depending the chipset)
>> this line is missing from the printing guide <<
modprobe printer

Hi, my /dev/usb/lp0 has gone missing too - however, it only disappeared after I did an emerge. I've been following the printer guide and managed to get through until the foomatic-configure, when I realized that the device was gone.
The only major thing I did between successfully printing to lp0 and realizing it was gone was emerge gimp-print, which also took in ghostscript, dgs, jbigkit, mpeg2vidcodec, and ImageMagick.
I'm using development-sources, so my modules were different than listed in the guide. I have usb support compiled into the kernel and have uhci-hcd, usblp, and hid in modules.autoload.
Plugging in my printer no longer gives any messages in /var/log/messages, although it did before emerging gimp-print. Nothing in my logs mentions lp0, except for a few messages from when it was working. Also, I think there were other devices in /dev/usb, but those have disappeared as well .
Anyone know how an emerge could erase my printer? I'll give you a cookie if you help....

Okay, let's not discuss how stupid my mistake was. We'll just say it involved a power button and leave it at that. |
