I've installed Gentoo 1.4_rc4 (sucessfully) on a Sun Ultra 10, an Ultra 5, and now am trying to install it on a Sparcstation 20.

The box has an external SCSI cdrom, and it works fine.

I do a 'stop + a' and a 'boot cdrom'. I see the usual Gentoo info (Welcome to Gentoo SPARC Linux...) as it boots up the cd and then I'm looking at a 'boot:' prompt.

Here's the weird part:

When I type 'gentoo', I get "You imagename 'gentoo and arguments '' have either wrong syntax, or describe a label which is not present in silo.conf."

Typing 'config' shows the silo.conf, 'video' show the video stuff, and 'help' gives me the help info. In the silo.conf, I see the 'gentoo' and 'gentoo-smp' entries in the silo.conf, but it gives me the same info on either one.

I used the same cd I used for the other two installs, and even downloaded the LiveCD from Aug 11th, but same issue.

A Solaris 2.6 install cd boots up just fine on the box.

Not sure how to get this thing to boot so I can install Gentoo.

Any ideas would be very appriciated!

I am probably totally off here, but are you attempting to boot the SPARC64 version of Gentoo on the SparcStation? I'm not 100% certain, but I don't believe that the SparcStation is 64-bit, you would need the SPARC32 version of the CD.

Hope that helps.

Yeap, that was the problem. I FNG'd it.

Did some RTFM'ing and found that the SS20 needs the 32bit Gentoo, but the LiveCD I grabbed only had the 64bit version.

Thanks for the quick response.
