Hi,
December edition of ati drivers has just been released and hopefully it'll reach portage soon. Apparently the memory leak has been fixed and FireGL support has been added. I wasn't able to use AIGLX with 8.433 and xorg-server-1.4 and I really hope that 7.12 will do a better job. Ebuild anyone?
Cheers,

Wojtek

copy the old 8.433 ebuild with the proper modified name, copy the patches in /usr/portage/x11-driver/ati-drivers/files/ to the same dir with the proper name and try building. it should work well.
or just wait a day or two for it to get into portage (i could bet it would get into portage since it has some important bug fixes and from the first tests i've read on phoronix forum it doesn't seem to have regressions).

Quick tested them by bumping the ebuild from je_fro's overlay (adjusting names and disabling the powermode patch).
Compiled against 2.6.24-rc5-git6 and worked, but as the release notes claim, there's no 1680x1050 on my laptop lcd, so dumped them for the November ones again.
AIGLX still works with xorg 1.3, haven't tested with 1.4 yet.

I think the most promising thing about these drivers is that their release notes don't tell the Distro maintainers to not use them, so AMD believes that these should be stable enough for common distribution.

Does it provide xv (see xvinfo) under xorg-server-1.4? Has anybody tested it with xinerama?

Hi! I'm having the same problem that Crunchy and Eong have, but Ive a pciexpress videocard.

GPU = Ati Radeon HD 2400 Pro (Gigabyte)
Driver = Catalyst 7.11/7.12

Do you have you displays connected to dvi or vga output?

Thanks!

I'm using dvi output to my 22' LCD.
This version should support hd2400pro AGP. We can see it in Xorg.0.log.
But only freezes.

Eong, your videocard is made by Ati or other branch? Mine is from Gigabyte... I was thinking that not all HD2400 are suffering this problem... VGA output is working well, but if I use that, TV output stop working (the user's manual says that VGA+TV isn't supported in my videocard)...

Here is my xorg.conf

I have a 9600XT from Sapphire in another PC, I will try that with dvi output...

This edition is a complete crap!!! Not only AIGLX still doesn't work with xorg-server-1.4 but also I cannot get 1440x900 (the first time ever I encountered this problem). Why, oh why did I buy a laptop with an ATI card?....
Cheers,

Wojtek

as much as i hate the ati drivers I still like the ATI/AMD product.... once radeonhd has 3d support im sure you will rethink that statement

I had no complaints.. UNTIL I fired up UT2004 which is SLOW. AIGLX works (STILL xorg-server 1.3).

Back to .433 for me..

EDIT: Just went back and it works perfectly again :)

http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7007&highlight=ati+drivers+7.12

many, many users are experiencing the same issues (including myself with a FireGL V5250). Unless ATI pushes out a fix for it soon, I guess we all have to wait and hope for a better release in January :(

On a more positive note, the radeonhd (xf86-video-radeonhd) drivers work well for what little they provide at this point.

and the xf86-video-ati driver work for r500/r600's now

hi rainbyte,
My hd2400pro AGP is a third party product, not from ATI. I dont think my VGA-output is working, because if it does, I would be able to kill X with ctrl+alt+backspace or change the numlock led status, but I cant. The whole system freezed.
I tried everything, including changing the Options in Xorg.conf, adjust the kernel, etc. But it still dont work for me.
I'm using radeonhd now, and it works.

Well, Eong I thought that too, but I tried with VGA output and it works, the machine doesn't freeze itself! But with DVI it doesn't work and the whole system get freezed... Yes, maybe you think "if VGA works why don't you use that" but I'm sorry to tell that my videocard doesn't support VGA+TV or VGA+TV+DVI, only DVI+TV or VGA alone (some kind of hardware limitation)...

I have RadeonHD installed too, but it doesn't have neither tv-out neither 3d accel... So it's the same...

Well, well have to wait until next release or some kind of solution...

I'm also not getting 1400x1050 with an X1400 in a Thinkpad T60. Back to 7.11 for me...

Hi! Well, finally it is working... Yes! It's true!! I think that was something that I changed in the kernel this morning...
Well here, pastebin:

Old kernel config
New kernel config

Same xorg.conf
New Xorg.0.log

Im not sure if that solved the problem, but it is easy to try that...
TV-out isn't working yet, but it recognise the TV, maybe changing the config...[/url]

the resolution issue wasn't present on my pcs and these settings, which were changed on your system, were always present:

CONFIG_PCI_MSI=y
CONFIG_ACPI_PROCFS=y
CONFIG_ACPI_PROC_EVENT=y

i've posted a thread on phoronix to make people try out this and see if they would have this issue fixed.
here's the thread:
http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?p=21081#post21081

i encourage any ati user to post his experience here or there and see if this is a workaround for this terrible issue.

Hey... I just compared both again and I found other change that you didn't mention:

# CONFIG_HUGETLBFS is not set
# CONFIG_HUGETLB_PAGE is not set

Maybe that's important too...
