[SOLVED]2.6.23-r3 & HP a1450n w/ Asus A8N-LA mb and 6150 LE

I had this system running relatively flawlessly on 2.6.17 (gentoo-sources-2.6.17-r4). After leaving it alone for about a year, I decided to update (upgrade toolchain and emerge -e system, emerge -e world). After a few emerge failures and restarts in the sequence it finished remerging all packages. The system now boots on 2.6.17 and Gnome even starts (with one caveat concerning "unknown user" at the exit dialog), but since the update upgraded linux-headers-2.6.17-r1 to linux-headers-2.6.22-r2 and recompiled relevant packages against those headers, I figured that I should recompile the kernel. When linux-2.6.23-gentoo-r3 wouldn't boot, I tried to recompile linux-2.6.17, and make failed on "head.o incompatible with i386 output" (from memory, because I didn't save the error logs), even though I have a system built for amd64 and don't know why there's anything with i386, other than the fact that it has multilib.

I decided to work on the problem with linux-2.6.23. The kernel compiles and installs without a hitch, but booting hangs at the following (with possible typed transposition errors):

This all looks very weird, because 2.6.17 puts the (non-removable) hard drive on /dev/sda and the MMC/SD reader on /dev/sdb. I don't know where it puts other built-in card readers, such as CompactFlash, because I have never used them, but /dev contains sda (hard drive) through sde.

I imagine the problem lies in the kernel config, which was borrowed from the 2.6.17 build when I started "make menuconfig" with /boot mounted. However, the misconfiguration isn't apparent to me.

If you have experience with resolving this kernel configuration and boot issue or can provide a minimal .config for an a1450n, I would appreciate your help. Thanks in advance.

Don't you have to "make oldconfig" first if you're importing your config from a previous kernel version? Then you can "menuconfig" to add anything that changed since.

Don't know if that will help or not. You may be forced to go through your kernel config with a fine toothed comb!

That is a possibility. However, "make menuconfig" seems to do just that on my current config when I have the /boot partition mounted. If I run menuconfig without /boot mounted menuconfig comes up with other default settings.

Of course, resolving the problem would require finding the problem in the config. I don't know what would cause the problem, when I know that I have reiserfs support built into the kernel. It appears that something has pre-empted that support or hung the boot on something else. Before I deluged the forum with my config and other configuration information I wondered if someone might have a ready answer as to what might cause the issue on this or other hardware. I'll provide the config if it will help the analysis.

Perhaps I'd be better off starting with a 2007.0 LiveCD and chrooting to a fresh partition. I have /home on a separate partition and free unpartitioned hard drive space to add another, so it is an option. However, I have already compiled all of the updates with an updated toolchain, and fixing the problem with the kernel would save a lot of time and the headaches involved in starting from scratch.

Aha! I found the problem. I was missing the SATA_NV kernel option,
-> Device Drivers
--> Serial ATA (prod) and Parallel ATA (experimental)...
---> NVIDIA SATA support.

Can I get a big "DUH!"?

The kernel now boots. It whines about missing a soundcard, but that's another issue, which I can research and probably resolve myself. I'm calling the original problem [SOLVED].

Glad you got it sorted. You need "eagle eyes" sometimes to spot those pesky kernel config issues!

Thanks. Yeah, it's a PITA. I've built enough kernels that I should know better by now.

Would it be considered a BUG that it didn't pull in the SATA_NV from the old config from the same major version tree? Of course, I'd have to double-check that it pulled in what I assumed it did. I'd also think about checking the original config for whether they renamed the CONFIG parameter or something else explained why the 2.6.17 kernel worked. Unless it pulled it in from something else in my /boot (which I may have since deleted when I cleaned it out), I would call it a BUG that it didn't translate it.

You'd have to consistently reproduce it, then you could consider it a bug and report it.
