Listen, I know Gentoo is the distro that we all know and love, myself included, I love the configurability as source-based distro and all that.
However... what's the point of that when you're dealing with a virtual machine language, and there barely are any build-time options to choose? Building all this stuff will ultimately lead to a result that could be found in a binary distro.
Wouldn't a binary distribution/package install(from source!) in this specific case be reasonable and still be in The Gentoo Way of doing things?
Honestly, this why I don't like to do Java development on Linux. |

That is frightening!
I am surprised that it needs all those deps. We us freemind at work on windows and all it seems to need is a JRE.
Perhaps try installing java 1.5 and then manually running freemind? _________________ Dont make it idiot proof, make it work.

Groovy! Well, it's really the Groovy scripting support of Freemind, which implies this impressive set of dependencies. Given that Sun is pushing for it, you may have to swallow it sooner or later with some Java based application. Looking at the Freemind wiki page, the ebuild doesn't even reflect TaskJuggler support, no idea about Latex... _________________ Please make sure that you have searched for an answer to a question after reading all the relevant docs. |

I don't get this type of result. I have IBM jdk's 1.4 and 1.5 installed, but not a heck of a lot of java, beyond that. I get:
Code: | localuser@localhost ~ $ emerge -ptv freemind
These are the packages that would be merged, in reverse order:
Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild N ] app-misc/freemind-0.8.0-r3 USE="-doc" 9,627 kB
[ebuild N ] dev-java/ant-core-1.7.0 USE="-doc -source" 6,683 kB
[ebuild N ] dev-java/javatoolkit-0.2.0-r1 20 kB
Total: 3 packages (3 new), Size of downloads: 16,328 kB |
You might add the "tv" options to your emerge, to see why things are getting dragged in. _________________ .sigs waste space and bandwidth |

Changed the subject from "omg surprise buttseks" to "freemind dependencies". Watch your language, please. _________________ KDE |

I have just tried to install Freemind, and it started compiling 60-odd dependency's. I have Blackdown installed - cant it use that? |

Tip of the day: To be able to see better what dependencies are being pulled in by what, add the -t (--tree) flag to your pretend/ask (-p/-a) parameter list. eg: emerge -pvt freemind
Now all your dependencies will be arranged in a nice tree format. |
