kvm switch issues

Trying to help out a friend here...searched the archives and this section of the forum (KVM doesn't seem to be viable for the search algorithm, for some reason), and no love.

He's got a Belkin Omniview 2 port USB KVM switch (he's not using the usb features, however).
When he's installing gentoo, and he switiches the KVM to another computer and then back, he gets a keyboard failure error. The keyboard is a standard PS/2 keyboard. It's worked fine with other distros (graphical installs, however).

Any help or places to look for help would be much appreciated.
