Hi!

I was just making a emerge -u world, when my xmms should be upgraded. Suddenly it was displaying an error message saying there was a non-ASCII Conform String in the Input/tonegen/tonegen.c in Line 22.

I watched there asn found the Name of a swedish (?) developer, written with swedish letters. I thougt this would be the error and fixed it. but after that, there were also errors in Input/vorbis/vorbis.c and in xmms/about.c.

So i fixed up all this (changed out the letters to ASCII-Conform letters) and then it worked. But i think this isn't a solution for my problem, is it?

So can anybody tell me, why this error comes up and what can i do?

Greets,
flow666

I also have this problem. The error message is as follows:

It is possible to fix this, but I'd rather not have to. Right now, I'm trawling through all the source files and replacing Håvard Kvålen with Havard Kvalen. I think that it's a problem with xgettext assuming that the files are ASCII-encoded rather than UTF8-encoded. How might I fix this? Maybe with --from-code=UTF8 - but where to put it?

I'm having the same problem, and I've been trying to replace the characters in those three files, but I haven't quite gotten it right yet.

Thanks,

I finally found all of the occurences in the file. Until I saw that you changed the characters in the comments as well, I just couldn't figure it out.

I guess I don't know what I'm doing enough for this tip to be helpful. I'm getting the same error, and changed the source files. Even made a new digest for the tar.gz file afterwards, but then the patch for mmx fails. I've since done an rsync and tried again, which wiped out the patch log file, but I can recreate it if need be. Anyone have any thoughts on what I did wrong?

Also, is there some way of using the above diff output to automatically make the changes for me? Always wondered that. :)

There is currently an open bug about xmms and xgettext. Let's hope it gets resolved soon so you won't have to use patches. ;)

Ciao, Brandy

Haha, using patches off here is always tricky...

Okay, what you have to do first:

Code:
mkdir -p /usr/local/portage/media-sound/xmms

That makes a directory in your portage overlay in which you can place an ebuild. Then:

Code:
cp /usr/portage/media-sound/xmms/xmms-1.2.7-r22.ebuild /usr/local/portage/media-sound/xmms
cp -R /usr/portage/media-sound/xmms/files /usr/local/portage/media-sound/xmms
cp /usr/portage/media-sound/xmms/Manifest /usr/local/portage/media-sound/xmms

Then, you want to save that patch in /usr/local/portage/media-sound/xmms/files as, say, names.patch. Then, edit /usr/local/portage/media-sound/xmms-1.2.7-r22.ebuild using your favourite editor, and after all the other patches, but before all the autoconf / automake stuff (the stuff that says: "We run automake and autoconf here else we get a lot of warning/errors. I have tested this with gcc-2.95.3 and gcc-3.1."), you put the line:

Code:
epatch ${FILESDIR}/names.patch

Then, type "emerge xmms" and, hopefully, you should get a nice working copy of XMMS with no xgettext errors to get in the way :)

Good luck!
