Hi.

I have the 9700 pro and am trying to get it to work with the ati-drivers binary drivers. My trouble is that the X server invariably hangs when it is launched, usually just with a blank screen, but sometimes it manages to draw a cursor or a few windows. After this point ctl-alt-bksp etc don't work, only the magic sysrq key.

Searching the web reveals that lots of people have had success with these drivers, so I'm trying to figure out what's wrong with my system.

I've tried it with various kernels, with agpgart compiled in and as module, with the fglrx's internal agpgart support etc.

Has anyone experienced hardware issues? My system is comparatively old: p3 800E (secc2, 100MHz FSB) and the mobo supports only agp 2x. The card works fine in winxp, tho.

I had an nvidia card before this and it worked perfectly...will I have to switch back?

The XF86Config and log are attached. The XF86Config is slightly modified, since I'm booted up using the XFree driver right now, but you can see both configs.

Have you tried it without OpenGLOverlay enabled? I'm not exactly sure what it does, but with it on, my glxgears fps drops from ~4500 -> 80 8O

Check the output of dmesg for error messages just after you load the fglrx module.

Have you tried turning off ACPI and APIC support in the kernel (if you have them enabled)?

Have you tried any driver versions other than 3.2.0?

I got to run out now for a while, so I will come back and try some stuff. I have tried the 2.9.12 driver, then the 3.2.0 and I just tried the 3.2.4 driver I found on another thread. all crash. I need to fix my kernel source, something seems to have gotten corrupted during all these crashes, and the kernel no longer compiles properly. I'll try it out with a minimal kernel config.

I should disable DRM support in the kernel, right?

To make sure you're starting from a good kernel, unmerge it, delete whats left in the /usr/src/<kernel-version> directory, and emerge it again.

Yes, DRM and fglrx will conflict with each other if you have both of them loaded at the same time.

Uh, I though I said I was trying to get it to work with ati-drivers?

I missunderstood you. I read it like you used the binary from ATI.com ie the rpm.

I tried that with my card and it didn't work, but emerge ati-drivers did.

Sorry if I sounded rude, aridhol.

Anyway, I tried again with a clean gentoo install with default opts, and it still doesn't work. I'm giving up for now, I'll wait till the dri folks support it. I tried out an nvidia geforce fx5600u, but for the price (cost $250 at bbuy), its performance is pretty lousy compared to the radeon (which cost me $300). My radeon is faster at 3dmark03 on a lowly P3-800/100 than the fastest 5600u they have on record!

I'll stick to playing games on wxp and work on linux, I guess :)
