hey all ive been trying to get a stable kernel runing on my kd7-raid box and i finally got one working for now anyway .... but after my latest kernel crash when i try to run emerge i get traceback spitting out all kinds of junk about files and functions in the files .....

i also notices that /etc/make.conf was a bunch of garbage so i replaced it with a backup... ( i learned the importance of those now...)

is there a way to reinstall portage keeping the list of currently installed packages, without using emerge?

if not is there any way i can fix this or am i looking at a recompile... ?

Looks like you have corrupted files somewhere. Possible causes could exist in:
/usr/portage - the portage tree
/var/db/pkg - the database of installed packages
/var/cache/edb - other information, like the world file, and virtuals

Of course, it really stinks to have to get rid of /var/db/pkg, and it's also pretty annoying to have to delete /var/cache/edb/world. You can easily check the world file for corruption, but trying to check /var/db/pkg would be a pain. I'd basically just move each directory until you moved the one which was causing a problem, at which point you'd stop getting errors from Portage.

/var/cache/edb? It contains the world file, the virtuals file (which, when there's more than one package that can satisfy some dependency, shows which package is doing so), and some other miscellanious data. I think I had to delete my /var/cache/edb directory because of file corruption at some point, but it wasn't too bad - not even close to as bad it would be if you lost /var/db/pkg (although, hmm, if you had an emerge.log dating back to when you made your install, you might be able to generate enough of it to get going... but I digress).
