I have both KDE and Gnome on my laptop but my laptop only has a 4GB drive and I am running short on space. I don't use Gnome so I want to remove it to free up space and to avoid the long builds of new versions. I may remove KDE, and stick with good ole fluxbox, for the same reasons (though I have grown somewhat partial to parts of KDE).

I've removed a pile of packages so far, all the gnome-base and gnome-extra stuff and some others, but emerge -uDpv world still wants to re-install Gnome:

Code:
roo root # emerge -upDv world

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating world dependencies ...done!
[ebuild  N    ] gnome-base/ORBit-0.5.17  +nls
[ebuild     UD] app-office/openoffice-bin-1.0.3.1 [1.1_beta-r1] +kde -gnome
[ebuild  N    ] gnome-base/libglade-2.0.1  -doc +nls
[ebuild  N    ] gnome-base/libgnomecanvas-2.2.1  -doc
[ebuild  N    ] gnome-base/libgnomeprint-2.2.1.3  +cups -doc
[ebuild  N    ] gnome-base/libgnomeprintui-2.2.1.3  -doc
[ebuild  N    ] gnome-extra/libgsf-1.8.1  -gnome -doc
[ebuild  N    ] gnome-base/ORBit2-2.6.3
[ebuild  N    ] gnome-base/bonobo-activation-2.2.3  -doc
[ebuild  N    ] gnome-base/gnome-mime-data-2.2.1
[ebuild  N    ] gnome-base/gconf-2.2.1  -doc
[ebuild  N    ] gnome-base/libbonobo-2.2.3  -doc
[ebuild  N    ] gnome-base/gnome-vfs-2.2.5  -doc +ssl
[ebuild  N    ] gnome-base/libgnome-2.2.3  -doc
[ebuild  N    ] gnome-base/libbonoboui-2.2.4  -doc
[ebuild  N    ] gnome-base/libgnomeui-2.2.2  -doc
[ebuild  N    ] x11-themes/gnome-icon-theme-1.0.6
[ebuild  N    ] x11-themes/gnome-themes-2.2.2-r1
[ebuild  N    ] gnome-base/gnome-libs-1.4.2  -doc +nls +kde

How can I find out what is triggering this? I am assuming it is something which is still installed which depends on Gnome since emerge -upv world does not list all the Gnome modules. I am going through my package list line by line but is there some easier way to see what is causing this? (I have USE=-gnome set).

And of course emerge wants to downgrade my OpenOffice again (emerge has flipflopped me between 1.0x and 1.1x 4 times now ... I suppose I could edit my world file to avoid that).

.md.

Two things:

1) Have you set -gnome2 in your USE flags too?

2) You can use qpkg -q -v -I <packagename> to see which packages depend on which.

hope that helps.
