unmerge perl

Is it dangerous to unmerge perl?

I'm having some problems with irssi and I think that I would be able to solve it by unmergin perl and then re-emerge it.

In theory, you should be able to run "emerge perl; emerge clean" and end up with a fresh Perl installation with none of the files from the previous version (the emerge clean is unnecessary if you have AUTOCLEAN enabled in /etc/make.conf)
