I tried 2.4.20rc-5 gentoo-source and also 2.4.21 vanilla source kernel
In either case, i can't build apm or acpi modules, or built in kernel the same

modules -> unresolved symbols
buitlt-in -> apm/acpi is not built in kernel

modprobe with the apm/acpi modules return the same error ( with apmd or acpid at boot runelevel)

I can't shutdown my machine with shutdown command (but reboot command works), it shuts power disks

I got asus a7v133 motherboard running kt133a chipset

Anybody has the same motherboard and managed to work with apm or acpi ?

7-8 kernel recompiled for nothing good, i'm fed up especially with my stock redhat is working fine with apm

You should only build one or the other, not both into the kernel.

Of course.

I mean i tried with either apm or acpi each time. That 's why i made some many recompil of the kernel.

Did you remember to mount /boot before you copied the kernel to /boot ?
Did you rerun /sbin/lilo after each kernel change ? (unless you are using GRUB)

At start, I was not mounting the /boot partition.
and after reading gentoo forums, i mounted /boot, copied kernel and umount after.
So i hoped that it would fix the problem but it didn't, that's why I posted this topic.
I read all topics concerning apm I guess.
Also, I'm using grub since the beginning.

When you get "unresolved symbols", you should clean up your /usr/src/linux directory:

Code:
cd /usr/src/linux
make mrproper

Make sure to backup your kernel configuration first. After you have done this, you should do a new full kernel compilation.

Damn ! It works.
make mrproper resolved the problem.

THX

Now, I can compile the apm module and modprobe it with no error.
I added apm power_off to /etc/modules.autoload.
However, when i made a "shutdown now" command, the system switched to runlevel 1 and did nothing after.
So i made telinit 0 and then it really powered off. It is ok but
why shutdown command switch to runlevel 1 instead of 0 ?

Shouldn't the command be 'shutdown -h now' ?

I'm not sure, because I usually use "halt", which works just fine.

Ok , that's fine.
"halt" made the trick ...

I will try shutdown -h now later to see if this it goes the same way.
Thx for everyone on this topic for your help.
