thats the bug I submited right when I heard about it. Not sure when the ebuild will come but I just downloaded and ran the binary. Works great.

Not sure if I will use it instead of Digikam since its so nice and surprisingly fast for something non-native.

Does the self-extracting installer install files all over the place, or is it all contained in the install directory you specify?

It can be installed in a self-contained directory within your home directory. (ie /home/it290/picasa).

I know this is asking a little much, but is there an alternative to picasa I could use for Gentoo? The main functionality I really want is the simple one-click enhancements to images like repairing the brightness and contrast and removing red eye. Something to touch up photos without having to know how to touch up photos...

Got any suggestions?

i dont know if ti fits your needs but i have heard quitegood comments about album shaper http://albumshaper.sourceforge.net/

any ideas on if there will be an ebuild for the "official" linux port?

masked/unmasked i don't care, but i prefer to have portage manage all my stuff for me. one of these days i'll learn how to write an ebuild myself....

Picasa looks really nice - just installed it and I must say it's really something. It's sad to see the lack of innovation in the opensource community - I mean in the past year the only major innovations have been the linux kernel, amorak, and kde. There was a photo viewer called f-spot, which so far looks promissing, but is really unstable.

I've tried picasa but it works faster on windows than on linux. And I don't know why but it crashes on any of the open file/folder dialogs when I'm not root, it must be something wrong with the permissions.
I'll stay with digikam, but I really like that picasa feature when you can start a slideshow with music in the background. It can be done with a bash script too but it's easier if you just click the photos and start the slideshow.

Wow, that's interesting. Your permissions problem aside, I can't imagine using digiKam over Picasa. I would love to use a KDE program over Picasa, but it just falls so far short it's not an option.

It wasn't a permissions problem. Whenever I try to open the root / folder picasa crashes, so I can't add any pictures to it. The same happens if I select to scan my whole computer when it starts up..

digikam has what I need, if I need to modify a picture i open it in gimp. I really don't like that picasa sorts everything by date, I have folders for grouping my pictures and digikam displays the whole tree for the folder where I gave my pictures. When I tried importing everything into picasa it was a mess, I couldn't find anything. When I download pictures from my camera digikam automatically puts them into a folder with the date they were taken so after I back them up to a cd it's at least somehow organised. It's hard to change habits :) I know that I could do something similiar with picasa but it's just more work.
Now I just need to find some cool slideshow program for when my firends come to watch my photos.

Anyone have any luck getting Picasa to detect your camera? I've got a Canon PowerShot S230 and it doesn't show up. The camera doesn't support USB mass storage but I understand that Picasa is supposed to be able to use any camera that libgphoto2 can use. I've tried both PTP and non-PTP modes and in both cases it's "No devices available". gtkam and gThumb work fine so it's not a permissions issue.

The current version of picasa included in the portage tree (2.22820.5) don't include the support for the upload of the photos on the web. Recently google released a new beta version for linux (2.7.3736.7) that include this great feature, but unfortunately this version isn't in the portage tree yet. I've tried to install it from the rpm package (downloadable at this address: http://picasa.google.com/linux/download.html) but it give to me a number of unresolved dependencies... I hope it will be inserted in the portage quickly!

I've found an alternative solution for uploading my photos to picasa, using an extension in firefox called FireUploader

I did following steps:

- downlaod deb for Debian/Ubuntu amd64 from http://picasa.google.com/linux/download.html
- unpack that data.tgz which is inside that deb
- did emerge picase from portage (2.2)
- cd /opt
- mv picasa picasa.backup
- mv _unpackDir/opt/picasa .
- as user did start picasa

I am running that program with outproblems for few minutes. hope it will okay ;-) there is only question to install 32bit SSL

I simply cannot get Picasa to print properly. I can print a single image reasonably well, but dense pages, etc, get chopped on the edges.

we have new picasa version in portage : 3.0.0.57.4402.0_beta

I have problem during installation, emerge is trying to donwload it again and again

so I did rename downloaded file :

Code:
mv /usr/portage/distfiles/picasa-3.0-current.i386.rpm /usr/portage/distfiles/picasa-3.0.0.57.4402.0_beta.i386.rpm

then it is okay

It seems this problem of having to rename the downloaded file still persists. I had to use the same command as proposed in the previous post to emerge picasa.
