I've just installed a brand-new gentoo-only system after windows decided to corrupt my entire disk, and i'm having trouble getting the java plugin to work on firefox.

first i emerged it from the portage tree (i can post my make.conf and package.use if it'll help (one thing i did have was -bindist set for firefox only, it's included in my make.conf globally though, and i have march="K8").
and as is the way i've got this to work in the past:
- i got the 32-bit jre-6u3-linux-i586.bin file from java.com, and installed it into /opt/
- i did a
Code:
> ln -s /opt/jre1.6.0_03/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib64/mozilla-firefox/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so

but about:plugins still shows nothing. when i run firefox from an xterm i get the following errors when doing so:
Code:
LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /opt/jre1.6.0_03/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so [/opt/jre1.6.0_03/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32]
LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /opt/jre1.6.0_03/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so [/opt/jre1.6.0_03/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32]

so this is where i need the help.
- what is an ELF? (besides the things i'm killing on runescape atm, although i thought it may help).
- i've also emerged a few other versions of java (mostly as dependencies) should i keep/ditch any of these?
Code:
> ls /var/db/pkg/dev-java/
antlr-2.7.7  java-config-1.3.7      java-config-wrapper-0.13
gjdoc-0.7.8  java-config-2.0.33-r1  sun-jdk-1.6.0.03

- will recompiling firefox with either bindist or march="i586" help at all?
- i also tried downloading the firefox binary from mozilla.com, which gives me
Code:
> /opt/firefox/firefox
/opt/firefox/firefox-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

(i've got USE="-gtk" in make.conf as i'm using KDE, is there one or two packages i can recompile in order to use the official binary?)
- or, are there any emerge-able versions of java that i can compile which will give me a working libjavaplugin_oji.so as a 64-bit?
