Amixer segfault

I just installed kde, and was proceeding to get sound to work. I compiled sound as a module in the kernel, without any of the options below that, and then installed aspi-utils and drivers. The intel8x0 driver is the proper one for my sound card, and it loads on startup fine (it shows up when I do an insmod). However, whenever I try to run amixer, I simply get a Segmentation fault. What can I do to fix this?
