I liek the latest list, except for one:

New Guy

Since we do have females here, yes.. yes... yes... I know, not many of them, but they do exist, maybe rather use the neutral:

New Geek

Don't worry -- "guy" is actually gender-neutral. (Slang for dock worker, look it up!)

Personally, I'd like so see a ranking system like this:
  • Newbie
  • Regular
  • Veteran
  • Guru
  • Tux's Little Helper
Seems to fit pretty well with how people value the different titles, anyway. :)

Even "newbie" could be used here IMO, not as a measurement of knowledge but only as how much time he/she/it is posting in the forums; for the rest of it, , I like the titles.

I don't like the newbie word as it sounds like the person is totally devoid any knowledge in the area and that may noe be the case. Whereas i feel 'New Geek' implies some previous knowledge. Just my 0.02 of course! :)

since # of posts is an indicator of forum use, why don't we assign labels of *nix commands and their frequency of use (converse/negative relationship)...

since there's tons of "n00bs", they could be `ls -al` (benign, very ubiquitous)
and whatever is the highest would be some obscure, seldom used command that could mess someone's setup up (if we're so inclined)... ok. ok... maybe temporarily mess up... nah...

you guys get my drift...

just thought i'd throw something else in the pot.

Well...

If we're going to do that, we might as well make the names be the answers to some of the most common questions. For example, the lowest rank could be something like: "Are you in the wheel group?"

I think we'd end up with a "The answer is XYZ, but what is the question?" type scenario :D

and if we keep it as commands, they'll at least figure out to `man` or `info` the thing... hehe...

hey...

n00b would be better as `man`
then like `apropos`
then info...
then maybe zcat...
cat foo | grep bar
find . -type f -name foo -exec grep bar {} /dev/null \;
u get what i mean...

the things can get ugly...

heheh :)

Maybe we should just change everyone's title into a link that goes to the forums search regardless of what it says. We could then change the title for a veteran to link to bugs.gentoo.org. :)

I really liked the egg idea. Sounds funny. But I'm happy as long as it's changed to something else.

EDIT: What about making a poll at one of the more trafficated forums with some of the exsamples as choices? Then "the winner" will be used after a certain preset voting time.

This has been discussed before. If there was a poll, it would be here. This is the proper forum for something like that. However, it would be more than possible to make an announcement in News & Announcements if we wanted to make sure that we got a lot of feedback.

Ooops, I already made a poll in the "Off The Wall" section. Well, you could always delete it...

Please follow up to New Ranking System - Will the l33tness Stop? This thread has moved beyond simply replacing the l33t rank.
