shouldnt there be an option to "opt in" for the beeping.

That's probably the best solution. As soon as that feature gets implemented in phpBB, I'd definitely be willing to implement it here. (as long as it doesn't cause stability problems, take up too many resources, etc., etc.)

In the mean time, I think the general consensus is to completely eliminate or severely curtail the scope of the bad word filter.

As I promised, a decision would be made at the end of the weekend, and it has.

Let it be known: Mr. *beep* is dead.

This should speed up the forums too. No more preg_replace() calls.

I've read this whole thread, and I'm left wondering, "what's a beep"?

I have a very vague idea of what it does (some sort of bad-word censoring)... but that's about it.

I'm kind of new here. :)

Also, I was wondering (I know this is o/t, but I don't know where else to post it)... how do I reply to a specific post, rather than just post to the thread? I see people's posts quoting others (effectively blockquoting, but w/ coloring, etc)... how do I do that?

Back in the day... bad words would be replaced by *beep*. So, it was "*beep* the lid on tight" etc.

Yes, for some reason bad words get f...euhm beeped out :)
So yes, it's some kind of word censor and nothing else (I hope ;) )

You can use the "Quote" button on the top right of a post to quote the user...If you post a message, at the top there are some buttons you can use those for Code etc. too :)
