the alsa module is loaded, and sound works ok.

BUT, if i plug my headphones in the jack, the sound continues in the laptop sound system....and headphones zero...

Try media-sound/alsa-driver instead of the in-kernel ALSA, it’s newer. Follow the Gentoo Linux ALSA Guide.
Please add [SOLVED] to your message title if your problem is solved.

Would you please give us a reply whether that worked for you, lolikapuxa? I have a similar problem with intel-hda: Sound works via the headphone jack, but sometimes the speaker keeps on blaring when I connect headphones. Very annoying...

Wow, I can't believe how many hda-intel threads there are.

Anyway, the hda-intel driver tries to autodetect your chipset. It doesn't always do this correctly... is the hda-intel driver complaining about not recognizing the chipset? You might have to force it to use a particular model like I had to on my laptop.

Some common symptoms of it guessing the wrong model are:
  • No sound at all
  • Static with sound output
  • Headphone jack has no sound output
  • Headphone jack won't auto-mute when plugged in (my laptop had this problem)
Here's a method to try to get it working:

Check the following output:

Code: Select all

$ dmesg | grep -i hda_codec
If the above results in something like

Code: Select all

hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC883, trying auto-probe from BIOS...
Then it can't determine the model for the chipset your PC is using. When it does this, it's time to look in the kernel documentation for the snd-hda-intel codec:
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/alsa/ALSA-Configuration.txt wrote: ALC883/888
3stack-dig 3-jack with SPDIF I/O
6stack-dig 6-jack digital with SPDIF I/O
3stack-6ch 3-jack 6-channel
3stack-6ch-dig 3-jack 6-channel with SPDIF I/O
6stack-dig-demo 6-jack digital for Intel demo board
acer Acer laptops (Travelmate 3012WTMi, Aspire 5600, etc)
medion Medion Laptops
targa-dig Targa/MSI
targa-2ch-dig Targs/MSI with 2-channel
laptop-eapd 3-jack with SPDIF I/O and EAPD (Clevo M540JE, M550JE)
auto auto-config reading BIOS (default)
There are several chipsets that snd-hda-intel recognizes, for the sake of the example above, I've only shown the ALC883 chipset here. As you can see, there are a lot of different models that can be used just for this chipset. So, now we need to tell snd-hda-intel to actually use one and not guess!

To do this, snd-hda-intel needs to be compiled as a module (kernel drivers are shown):

Code: Select all

Device Drivers  --->
   Sound  --->
      <*> Sound card support
      Advanced Linux Sound Architecture  --->
         <*> Advanced Linux Sound Architecture
         PCI devices  --->
            <M> Intel HD Audio
ALSA itself can be in-kernel, only the actual driver needs to be a module.

Once that's done, we need to load the module, so we need to edit /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6:

Code: Select all

# /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6: kernel modules to load when system boots.
#
# Note that this file is for 2.6 kernels.
#
# Add the names of modules that you'd like to load when the system
# starts into this file, one per line. Comments begin with # and
# are ignored. Read man modules.autoload for additional details.

# For example:
# aic7xxx
snd-hda-intel
Then, run update-modules:

Code: Select all

$ update-modules
 * Updating /etc/modprobe.conf by hand ...    [ok]
 * Updating modules.dep ...                   [ok]
Now the system is ready to try different models. To change the model, we need to edit /etc/modules.d/alsa. A new line needs to be inserted:

Code: Select all

options snd-hda-intel model=targa-dig
In that example, I used targa-dig out of the list above. Once the line is added, run update-modules again:

Code: Select all

$ update-modules
 * Updating /etc/modprobe.conf by hand ...    [ok]
 * Updating modules.dep ...                   [ok]
Now, reboot and see if your card works. Alternatively you can stop ALSA and remove and reinsert the module after changing the model, but I've had mixed luck with that.

If your card still isn't working, try using another model in the list. If you have tried all the models, it's possible that your model or chipset is so new that the drivers in the kernel aren't aware of it - then you'll need to get the alsa-driver package and repeat.

dmesg | grep -i hda_codec doesn't return errors.

It's still possible that the driver is using the wrong model, or your card is just not supported properly.

What's the audio section output of `lspci -vv`?

I'm jumping on this thread because I think my problem (the headphone jack works, but the speaker is not turned off) might be related.

Trying to use alsa-driver broke my sound completely, so I'm back with using ALSA as kernel modules. hda_codec does not return errors, but I still think the problem might have to do with the model (mine is set to 3stack, a value I have found on some other forum thread).

Is there a way, other than guessing and trying out all possible values, to find the correct model for my card?

FWIW, here is my lspci -vv output:

lolikapuxa & daemonflower:

It's still quite possible it's using the wrong model for your card. My laptop worked out of the box until I tried using headphones, that's when I started trying different models.

Unfortunately, I don't think there's an easier way other than trying models manually. I found the one that worked with mine in less than 5 minutes.

I'm suffering from the working internal laptop speaker and a non working internal mic or headphone jack on an Intel HDA chip issue too.

So far I've has some success setting the model to vaio and viao-ar (headphones work but the speakers don't mute and I can now enable my internal mic), but I'm not really keen on the entire trial and error method for finding the proper model to set. So I did a little poking around in /proc

Code: Select all

$ cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#0 | grep -i ^codec
Codec: SigmaTel STAC9872AK
I get this in /proc no matter what I set in /etc/modules.d/alsa and when I look in the alsa config document I see this:
Module snd-hda-intel
--------------------

Module for Intel HD Audio (ICH6, ICH6M, ESB2, ICH7, ICH8)
...
STAC9872
vaio Setup for VAIO FE550G/SZ110
vaio-ar Setup for VAIO AR
...
So I'm thinking I've set the right codec, but have an off shoot chip.

Anyhow, I hope this helps you with finding the proper model to set.
Now to figure out if the internal mic works
