|
|
I am about to get my brand spankin new 300 mhz IBM laptop (used of course), and I plan to put gentoo on it (already have gentoo on my desktop). It doesn't yet have an ethernet card so I need to get one for school.
Question is, should I get wireless or regular? My apt. will have wireless and so do several buildings at my campus. I guess more specifically, how easy is it for either card to connect to the internet when I first install gentoo? In the beginning of the installation guide it doesn't say anything specifically about PCMCIA cards, so does that mean it should work fine from the beginning? Wireless too?
Thanks

I had to use Knoppix to get my wireless card to work. I installed Gentoo from there. It would probably be easier to use a wired pcmcia ethernet card with the LiveCD, but what's the fun in that? Wireless is really nice to have too.

wireless is a nice thing to have, but for a slower machine, I'd go with a regualar card.. that also to save yourself the time in getting the card to work.
That is unless your like me, then you'll buy the wireless card because your board and need something challenging to do |

How'd you get Knoppix - is it on the live cd? It's kinda like a viscious circle since you need portage to get the program, and you need the program to use portage. |
