I am new to this form and Gentoo. I have followed the Gentoo Handbook and installed Gentoo successfully after a few days of trying. Very well written book! I got the fb splash working and now I am working on setting up the desktop environment. I have chose gnome. I do not know exactly how the /etc/make.conf works but I added the USE=" alsa X -qt3 -qt4 -arts -kde gtk gnome hal avahi". As far as I know, the 'X' flag IS set, so I am not sure why 'cairo needs it set'. But I compiled for about 2 1/2 hours waiting for emerge gnome to finish the 200+ packages. It then stopped with an error on the x11-libs/gtk+-2.10.14 package saying 'die "cairo needs the X flag set". I have searched the forms and could find nothing that relates to my problem. Please help. Thanks.

Cairo needs to be compiled with the X use flag set, so do an
Code:
emerge -pv cairo
to check the USE flags on it.
If it wasn't compiled with the X use flag, recompile it
Code:
emerge -1av cairo

Thanks for the quick reply. I am compiling the packages right now. I just did another emerge gnome and it seems to be finishing the gnome install. Thanks again.

It happened again...But this time it says "You MUST build sys-apps/pciutils without the zlib USE flag" I checked the make.conf and there is no zlib in the use flag. It is package sys-apps/hal-0.5.9.r1. I hate to post all the errors...was there something I am doing wrong or is was there something else I was supposed to do before I emerge gnome? Or something I can read to avoid the errors? Well, any help will be appreciated.

I assume that the command to build sys-apps/pciutils without the zlib USE flag will be similar to the above command.
Code:
emerge -pv cairo
but I am not sure how to execute it.

I have found a fix! For anyone else with this problem you can look here https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-576064-highlight-sysapps+pciutils+zlib.html

can you post your emerge --info, because I think that you use the 2007.0 profile instead of the 2007.0/desktop
