|
|
Since I own a Laptop and use it in different wired and wireless networks I needed a configuration that can detect and configure automagically which network I'm in at the moment and configure the interfaces accordingly. After trying NetworkManager (problem: no static config possible) I found a setup using gentoos network-scripts that does exactly this for LAN and WLAN. Here are the features:
- You can have static or dynamic (DHCP) config for LAN and WLAN in dependence of the network
- Automatic detection of network-cable and start/stop of the interface
- Define preference for interface if both are up and configured (e.g. Prefer LAN over WLAN because of speed)
This is mostly a combination of existing tipps and tricks, so most credit goes to the people who wrote these (sorry, but I forgot which pages exactly I used, cause there were to many ^^) and the gentoo devs who wrote gentoos network scripts! I only collected the Infos and combined them in one place.
Since I first posted this on my own HP (mainly as a reminder for myself) and I dont feel like writing it all over again here is a Link:
Gentoo Automatic Network Profiles
I hope someone finds this usefull.

Looks like I cannot set up wpa_supplicant and "config_essid" in /etc/conf.d/net at the same time.
From http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Wireless_Configuration_and_Startup
Code: | Note: You will need to comment out any config_ESSID settings, as they do not work in conjunction with wpa_supplicant. If not, you will receive the following hard-to-read error:
Nov 13 06:14:20 yourhost wpa_cli: interface ath0 CONNECTED
Nov 13 06:14:21 yourhost wpa_cli: executing '/etc/init.d/net.ath0 --quiet start' faileds that you cannot set up |
How did you make it work? _________________ http://topperh.ath.cx

Well, I didn't do anything special, just set it up like I described in the howto, and it just works. Maybe you have a different baselayout-version? I have baselayout-1.12.9-r2
btw. The link points to an empty page in the wiki but without the ":" at the end it works ^_^ _________________ Desktop: AMD Athlon64 4850e@2,9GHz| 2GB RAM | 500GB HDD
