3ware 8500 serial raid controller - pure hardware solution!

hi,

I am wondering if the 3ware 8500 serial ata raid controller is 100% hardware, or is it one of these semi-hardware that require a driver (like on-board so called raid controllers) ?

I am considering it for a gentoo server. I know there is 3ware support in the kernel, is that all I need? and will linux see it as a single scsi device ?

ANY advice or help would very very very much appreciated!!

thank you!!

We are using 4 channel 8500 - RAID 1+0, and it is very very fast. For our new file server we plan for 8 channel 9500 with 250GB hitachi drives - 4 drives at the begining. The new controler allows to add drives in a RAID volume without breaking it 8O
