Argh. I've spent a very long time searching the 'board about this as it seems to have been discussed many times. However, I've tried all the solutions mentioned and have had no luck with any. So here goes:

Basically, everything appears to be working fine. All the modules are loaded. Alsasound starts without error. aplay plays wav files without error. ARTS runs without complaint. The whole system seems fine, except I can't actually hear anything. No sound is produced at all.

Sound used to work before I did a reinstall.

yes, I have unmuted everything and turned it all up to maximum

System - IBM Thinkpad A31p
Driver - Intel8x0
Code:
shiro simon # grep audio /proc/pci
Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801CA/CAM AC'97 Audio (rev 2).

soundcore compiled as module. everything else sound-related is off. Here are the sound-related modules I have loaded.
Code:
shiro simon # lsmod | grep snd
snd-pcm-oss            40196   0  (autoclean)
snd-mixer-oss          13880   0  (autoclean) [snd-pcm-oss]
snd-intel8x0           19844   0
snd-pcm                64448   0  [snd-pcm-oss snd-intel8x0]
snd-page-alloc          5196   0  [snd-intel8x0 snd-pcm]
snd-timer              15656   0  [snd-pcm]
snd-ac97-codec         38016   0  [snd-intel8x0]
snd-mpu401-uart         3824   0  [snd-intel8x0]
snd-rawmidi            14560   0  [snd-mpu401-uart]
snd-seq-device          4368   0  [snd-rawmidi]
snd                    31396   0  [snd-pcm-oss snd-mixer-oss snd-intel8x0 snd-pcm snd-timer snd-ac97-codec snd-mpu401-uart snd-rawmidi snd-seq-device]
soundcore               4164   3  [snd]

I have been through alsamixer and unmuted everything with the 'm' key. I have turned everything up to 100%. Here is the output of amixer:
Code:
shiro simon # amixer

Everything plays without error. The call to aplay "waits" for a sensible length of time (the length the file should be) before quitting.
Code:
simon@shiro simon $ aplay /usr/share/frozen-bubble/snd/newroot_solo.wav
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/frozen-bubble/snd/newroot_solo.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 44100 Hz, Stereo

I have tried both with external speakers connected, and without (to play through the speakers in the laptop) - neither produces any sound.

I have tried 'cat /dev/audio' - and I get continuous output. It looks like the output changes when I play a file, but it's hard to tell. My skills at reading garbage and taking meaning from it aren't the greatest in the world. ;)

I can't think of anything else. It's not broken speakers because I've tried internal and external. The modules are loaded. The sound is unmuted and turned up. Everything plays without error. NO SOUND COMES OUT!

help?

p.s. sorry for lengthy post

Well, just thought I'd throw in the solution.

I feel really stupid here.

Seems that sound packed up when I installed the thinkpad driver (emerge thinkpad) and got it working... There are four buttons on the thinkpad that I've always ignored. One has "ThinkPad" written on it, one has a picture of a speaker with a line through it (mute), one has a speaker with an up arrow, and one has a speaker with a down arrow.

I pressed the button with a picture of the speaker with an up arrow.

It seems these buttons override everything that alsa does, so even if alsa is fully equipped and set up to talk to the sound card and speakers, you won't hear anything if these buttons have muted the sound.

Hey, ho. At last I can have mp3s again. I can't believe I went 3 months or so, moaning about sound not working on my lappy, without trying pushing one of those!
