Hi,

Few days back I had recompile my gcc as I needed objc support. Today I had to recompile it because I needed gcj support. It takes a lot of time for every compilation and this makes me wonder why don't we have a gcc-meta package and split ebuilds just like KDE. It will definitely save me a lot of compilation times. Please address this. Thanks

Moved from Portage & Programming to Gentoo Chat.

Main reason is that it requires quite a bit of effort to split it... all these are part of the same package, gcc, and the upstream maintainers keep it all packaged together.

X.org split up their distribution and hence it's got a meta-package... Until gcc does too, I'm not sure we'll see it...

Hi

Thanks for the reply.

I understand that, but isn't that the case also with KDE. I understand that it would be pretty much an effort to make the split ebuilds and also to maintain them, but I guess it would be worth it. Compiling just gcc for 1 language takes much less time than the whole thing. Thanks
