Hi there,

I am trying to "emerge -u system", and I get the following error:

!!! Error: the <dev-perl/ExtUtils-MakeMaker-6.05-r6 package conflicts with this package and both can't be installed on the same system together.

So I looked in the ebuild, and there is a inncompatibility between Perl5.8.0 and MakeMaker-6.05. Is this expected ?

Does this mean that to complete the emerge -u system, I'll have to downgrade to perl 5.6?

Thanks for any help/hints on the next step. For now, I will forget about the -u system for the time being.

thanks

JM

to emerge perl<something>-r12 you need to unmerge whatever conflicts with it, not sure why but i think it now comes automatically with the perl ebuild

Yo

So that means that dev-perl/ExtUtils-MakeMaker-6.05-r6 is not compatible with dev-lang/perl, despite being required when doing emerge -u system?

Doesn't make sense at all. Am I missing something?

yeah you need to remove all occurances of the blocking packages and then you can emerge the new perl with the updated versions. it took me a few days to figure this out, but it works. just don't let etc-update clobber your config file like i did :) .

So, what do you think yourself, is it a bug (bad QA) or a feature (bad design)?

It was a portage bug for these packages to get installed in the first place. This bug has been fixed, that's why all these block messages show up.
