PostPosted: Thu Aug 23, 2007 11:10 pm    Post subject: Strange nvidia behaviour [solved] Reply with quote

I am currently using nvidia-drivers-1.0.9755-r1 on amd64, and for several reasons (including occasional ~1 second "hangs", among others) I have longed to update the nvidia-drivers. I did try both the 100.14.09 and 100.14.11, with quite a few different kernel versions, to no avail.

When I try to boot with 100.14.09, everything is fine until it wants to start xdm. Here the screen suddenly turns black (even the backlight goes out), and nothing more happens (at least not for ~10 minutes). If I try to restart X by CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE the backlight flashes, and then again nothing happens. I know that the login screen actually IS there somewhere, because I can (using the keyboard) choose the 'shut down' or 'reboot' options from the menu (though I can't see them). When I do so, the screen continues to be black, until the computer resets (I can't see what's going on during shutdown).

When I try to boot with 100.14.11, everything is the same as with 100.14.09, except that it lets me see what's going on during shutdown.

After each try I have looked at my Xorg.0.log, and I can't see what's wrong. Since someone probably will find the error by using it, here's my latest Xorg.0.log (using the 100.14.11 module):

When it boots into the mode with the "dead" screen, do you get display on tty1 (CTRL-ALT-F1)? Can you do stuff on tty1 (like login, reboot...)?

What card is it? (
Code:
lspci -v | grep -i vga -A 14

And perhaps post the Driver and screen sections of your xorg.conf

The Nvidia readme and Gentoo instructions say not to load this with their driver. Remove it from modules section in xorg.conf.
Code:
(II) Loading /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions//libdri.so

Thanks for pointing that out, even though it did not solve my problem.

I know I'm grasping at straws but:
I notices you don't have a resolution set...is it possible the driver (which couldn't find edid frequencies is picking one your screen can't handle?
Do you have a wide screen?
Can you try setting a standard resolution for your screen? 1024x768 for 4:3 screen etc...

PS, is this a laptop?
Edit: it is a geforce go 6100 according to the driver, so it is a laptop

Yes, it is a widescreen (1280x800) notebook, but none of these resolutions worked: 1280x800, 1024x768, 800x600. I tried with both the 100.14.09 and the 100.14.11 this time as well :(

Probably your card is a dual-head card.
The log says that the driver uses the CRT monitor output:
Code:

(II) NVIDIA(0): Assigned Display Device: CRT-0

So if you have an old monitor you can test that.
If you want to use the flat panel, you can add the following line to your screen section:
Code:

    Option      "UseDisplayDevice" "DFP"

Then it should work.

I've got a nvidia geforce go 7300 and I use it dual-headed, too and everything works fine with the 100.14.09 driver.

Wow! The knowledge on this forum keeps amazing me, adding that line did the trick. How come this is not mentioned somewhere in the X guide or the nvidia guide? Thanks again everyone!

It's mentioned in the nvidia drivers readme (/usr/share/doc/nvidia-drivers-100.14.09/README.bz2 in my installation) in Appendix B. "X Config Options" at line 5021.
It took a lot of time until I found it there

Well, it is good that at least someone reads the readme's ;)
Unfortunately it is too tedious to read them in the console..
